Andy Qua Delivers 'Cube Runner' Sequel

posted October 10th, 2008 12:24 AM EST by arn in $2.99, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Racing

Andy Qua has released a sequel to his original Cube Runner game tonight.

Cube Runner II [App Store] is a separate product from the original free app and is now a $2.99 product.

The basics of the game remain the same: fly your ship using your iPhone's accelerometer while avoiding obstacles. In Cube Runner II, Qua has added a number of additional features:

  • Time Trial Mode
  • Internal level editor
  • Object editor, Stackable Blocks

The Time Trial mode allows you to tilt forward/backward to speed up and slow down. The game comes with 3 of the standard levels and 4 time-trial levels. As before, you can download custom creations. A community at Cuberun.org has sprung up to share levels for the original game.

While veterans of the original Cube Runner may want to compensate Qua for his efforts by purchasing the pay version, the new version fails to add much polish to the original effort. While the availability of a built-in level editor is nice, it is quite technical and unlikely to be of much interest to a casual player.

The original free version of Cube Runner also remains available in the App Store.

Well I had a quick blast on the first one every once in a while, but haven't played it in ages. I found it was good fun in short bursts. I wouldn't bother with the editor if it is too complicated. With this in mind, is it worth me buying the new one?

Maybe I'm just a dud, but I never saw what the arms-waving obsession with this game was all about. I think it was one of the first iPhone games that you could used accelerometer control with or something, so everyone jumped on the bandwagon at the time.

These days it's kinda plain-jane, endless, and pointless.

well, a sequel should be uhm... a "sequel", and not just some "expansion-set-like" or an update...

lemme guess by the looks of the screenshots: same graphics, same engine, same ol' same old...

    2.99 for a "sequel"? i'll pass.

won't we just be able to play the new user created levels on the old version anyway? (new levels with bridges & stacked blocks & whatnot)

I don't really have any interest in making levels, or a time trial for that matter. but I wouldn't mind playing some new, more interesting levels.

I'd really like to see a new version with enemies and some firepower!
basically I want to see cube runner or biiball evolve into first or third person shooters.

the fluid controls and simple graphic style would be great I think.
but I imagine they would want to make those separate projects, and not change their current games.

I tried the first one just to see what all fuss was about, but I never figured it out. I was a little surprised to see this version is $2.99. I really don't think the first one would have been such a hit if it wasn't free. Updating outdated graphics a little bit doesn't seem grounds for that price increase.

$2.99 isn't a lot of money, but, in principal, that's kinda lame.

I never really thought much of the original either, but just want to note that the new version adds control of speed via tilting forward/back, and has time trials. So that does change the game a bit. Still I've no interest in buying this since I didn't think the original was particularly fun.
