Shape-matching Puzzler 'Spin' Coming Soon

posted October 10th, 2008 11:17 AM EST by Blake Patterson in iPhone games, iPod touch games, News, Puzzle, Upcoming Games

Secret Exit, who you may remeber from our preview of the upcoming surreal puzzle game Zen Bound, will soon be releasing Spin for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Spin is a game that challenges shape recognition, one of the fastest mechanisms of the human brain. There are three game modes, unlockable trophies and a hundred different 3D objects. In other words, plenty to play and high scores to beat.

The iPhone version of Spin takes advantage of the multi-touch controls, allowing the players to quickly spin objects in three axes using simple gestures. With the updated controls (multi-touch makes a huge difference in gameplay), re-tuned difficulty levels and the large screen on the iPhone, this is the definitive mobile version.

Spin for the iPhone is an adaptation of the mobile hit SiL, which won two awards at the Mobile Game Innovation Hunt in GDC 2007 as well as the Best Mobile Game award in the 2006 Forum Nokia Pro competition.

See the game in action in the developer's demonstration video:

Secret Exit is a small indie developer located in Helsinki, Finland.  The team of five has been working on mobile games for the past year and will soon be making more fruits of their labor public.  They are an eclectic mix of developers with backgrounds in the demoscene, mobile gaming, and mainstream PC gaming (the AI lead in the popular PC game Crysis is among them).  We look forward to seeing more of what this group has in store for the iPhone gaming community.

    Thanks guys,

The music is a direct capture from the game's own soundtrack, which has been composed by the excellent and talented Jonne 'Purple Motion' Valtonen.

@Frand: Woah, Purple Motion? I am a huge PM fan. Ever since I saw Second Reality for the first time, I was hooked. I've recently gotten back into MODs on modern machines and it's been good fun.

The iPhone game Vector Blaster has excellent MOD music by Mick Rippon. Check the artist's website: http://www.mickrippon.com/

I remember buying games from Fathammer back when I had a Tapwave Zodiac. They had some pretty good games for it, and eventually went on to make some more for the Gizmodo. Seems they had a lot of talent, but kept developing on a dieing platform. :) Anyway, hopefully we will see some of their old games get update to the ipod.

Oh sorry if that last comment seems random, just noticed the fathammer logo during the video. I'm guessing that Secret Garden must have bought the IP from Fathammer.

    Secret Garden, eh? :D

If you liked Stuntcar Extreme on the Zodiac, you'll be happy to know that Jetro was the lead engineer for that game, and he's a co-founder of Secret Exit. I (Jani) worked at Fathammer as a game designer and producer for four years before starting up our own studio.

It feels good to be able to bring our work to a platform that isn't dying :)

Spin looks like a lot of fun. Have you submitted it to Apple yet?

Oh I am loving the visuals, the concept and the music. This is exactly te kind of fun gameplay and gfx and music I am looking for for games on my Touch. As soon as you release it: I'm in! Keep it up: this is fantastic. I keep replaying the video.

If you liked Firehammer, did you check out Angelfish? It was the spiritual sequel, and was released on Gizmondo at least. I remember playing it on the Zodiac, and it looked really good on that screen... but I can't remember if that build was ever available in public. It might have been just an internal test when Tapwave had already become defunct.

The good news is, Angelfish was released as a free PC download before Fathammer went belly up, and that zip file should still be floating around the intertubes.

The name of the file was something like Fathammer_Angelfish_WinXP.zip, see if you can hunt it down. It's a lot nicer than Firehammer in every aspect.
