EA Releases One-Level 'Free Spore Origins LE'

posted October 20th, 2008 9:02 PM EST by Blake Patterson in Free, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Simulation

Electronic Arts has released a free, one level trial version of the iPhone game Spore Origins [$7.99 App Store]: Free Spore Origins LE [App Store].

Get to know a few of the iPhone/iPod touch amazing features without commercial interruption!

  • Tilt, turn and twist your way through the primordial ooze with your motion-sensing accelerometer.
  • Pinch, pull and poke your creation in the Creature Editor, customizing the texture, shape and body parts to fit the way you want to play.
  • Personalize your gameplay by skinning your creature with pictures from your device’s Photo Albums.

We reviewed the Spore Origins (with video) back in September.

Very bad idea. I have the game and the first few levels made me stop playing because it was so boring. Now that I've gotten to level 10+, the game actually get fun and kinda challenging, but seeing how much level one sucks is going to make people not want the game.

I downloaded the demo, and it was certainly useful.

Essentially it confirmed what I'd picked up from watching videos ... that the game consists of steering your organism around eating small things and avoiding big things.

It's beautifully produced ... but the actual gameplay illustrated in the demo is so simplistic as to be comical.

Is this really what all the ravingly positive reviews on the app-store are about?

I'm sure it gets harder on subsequent levels, but if the fundamental "gameplay" is the same then I really don't know what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, not available in the UK store yet either. Damn you EA and your American-centric business practices!

/any ideas if there will be versions in other territories?

It's rather pointless. Not a very good game at all. I agree with other comments - don't understand what all the fuss is about. Perhaps on PC it is more developed and interesting.

I predict the one-level LE free demo version of this game will end up turning off more potential buyers than convincing them to buy the full version.

the single level playable in the demo is WAY too short, and they severely limit the items you can edit on your creature. would it have killed EA if they opened a few more items or let you try out 2 levels? or is the gameplay really no more interesting after level 1?

makes for a really unconvincing demo. the only natural reaction after playing it is simply, "Is that it?"

even the free creature editor they released on the PC and Mac is a more interesting introduction to the game than this. you're really not missing much in the UK and Netherlands! :)
