Upcoming Dungeon Crawler 'Rogue Touch'

posted February 14th, 2009 1:46 PM EST by Blake Patterson in Adventure, Exclusives, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Retro, Role-Playing, Upcoming Games

We've seen a lot of retro titles coming through the App Store of late and the trend doesn't seem to be slowing.  (And that's fine by me!)  ChronoSoft is putting the finishing touches on Rogue Touch, their iPhone port of the classic dungeon crawler Rogue.

Rogue Touch is the classic dungeon adventure-RPG completely reborn for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Explore the Dungeons of Doom while trying to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor...

Features as listed by the developer:

  • Random dungeon layouts and items: no two games are ever the same!
  • Graphical, animated actions, special attacks, traps, and more.
  • Ambient background dungeon sounds.
  • Auto-mapping feature with map overlay.
  • Keyboard command system replaced with streamlined inventory-item-action
system for simple touch gameplay. Read scrolls, Drink potions (or throw them
at your enemies!) and much more with a clear, simple interface.
  • Dedicated on-screen buttons for resting and searching for traps/secret
    doors.
  • Auto save system so you can resume where you left off next time.
  • All of the monsters and items as seen in the Rogue ports of the mid 1980s,
    plus new items!
  • Secrets to be found!

Rogue Touch appears to use an enhanced set of the well done graphics tiles found in the Atari ST commercial release of the game, giving it a nice appearance and a retro feel.  The developer tells us that the game will be submitted to the App Store in the next few days.  It will be available at a first-week introductory price of $2.99.

A future update will bring multiple difficulty levels, achievements, and new equipment and monsters.

Have a look at ChronoSoft's demo video to get a feel for the game.

Users interested in this title may also want to have a look at Gandreas Software's solid iPhone port of Rogue [App Store, Free] which we looked at back in November.

This sounds a lot like an old Epyx game for the c64.

Looks pretty good, like all the little details in the video! Hopefully it will play a lot better than the rogue port by gandreas- that version is very hard to control with the gestures and has several bugs with throwing and zapping things.

We need more adventure games and RPGs in the app store!

Sega, please port Shiren the Wanderer to the iPod Touch. If you do, I will be your valentine.

Technically, you can get Rogue already in the AppStore.

    http://appshopper.com/games/rogue

It has the original ASCII interface and an update interface with basic graphics.

Some folks do, others *cough*Don*cough* apparently don't. ;) Anyway, the other port, as also already mentioned, has bugs that the developer seems in no hurry to fix.

@kia Eh? Not pretty enough? Evidently you're not familiar with the history of Rogue. You're lucky it's not ASCII graphics. (If we're lucky, it's an option.) ;)

With animation, sound, and a transparent map overlay ..damn ..this is super Deluxe Rogue! You don't think it's pretty enough, evidently you're of the console generation, and would be better off with Vay. :p

TKO, I'm glad you're familiar with the Rogues of days past! We definitely put a lot of work into Rogue Touch. As far as audio goes, in-game only has an ambient background of dungeon noises right now (various creaking, rats, etc but it sets the mood well). We're still trying to gather up enough unique monster sounds to assign them to every creature as an update- maybe even using stereo to our advantage, so you can hear something shuffling in the darkness to your left or right :) Since the original rogue has no audio at all (or graphics or animation for that matter) we figured we'd start small and see how people like it.

The original ASCII graphics did not make it into version 1.0, but I can promise you they're not forgotten and will appear as an easter-egg type of option in the future!

I'm a poster in the TouchArcade forums too (been around here lurking since the doors opened), so if you have any questions feel free to ask!
