'Galaga REMIX' Now in the App Store

posted April 8th, 2009 10:47 AM EST by Blake Patterson in $5.99, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Retro, Shooter

galaga_logoYesterday we reported that a lite version of Namco's Galaga REMIX appeared in the App Store [link], ahead of the full, paid release.  Early this morning the full Galaga REMIX [link] joined the lite version in the App Store.

"Galaga Remix" offers play of both the original 1980’s arcade game, and an enhanced remix version with extra features including intense boss battles, 9 power-ups types, and a variety of background images illustrating your fighter’s journey from Earth to the Galaga system.

Namco's preview video shows the REMIX side of the game.

Last week we spoke with Namco's mobile group who shared details of the iPhone version.

They hype all the retro games too much. Sure they were great games, but doesn't mean all the remakes are too. They should be a bit more selective.

What a waste of money. Why couldn't this just be a clean port of the classic arcade game, no need for a crummy Remix version. I'll pass on this, thanks.

There is a clean port included in the game. It is up to you if you want to play the remix version or not.

It's all about the controls on this game. Try the Lite version. If you don't like the controls, don't get it. If you like the controls well enough, I'd say it's worth getting.

Absolutely horrible. The controls make these games unplayable, especially classic Galaga. Remix is actually a very well done update that is also available via the Namco Museum on the PSP, however on the iPhone/Touch Namco has once again borked the controls.

Not only is the D-pad too small and unresponsive, but the sliding tab actually has LAG and whomever decided the accelerometer was a good idea for a control method over at Namco should be committing seppuku right now.

These games need dead on accuracy and response and you won't get it in this package. Classic Galaga is horribly emulated and overall this is possibly one of the worst ports of the game I've ever seen on any system in the almost 30 years of being a fan of the game.

$5.99? I wouldn't pay a quarter. I swear I was almost in tears at how bad they butchered this.

Note also that the REMIX portion of the game is basically Galaga Arrangement which isn't just a mobile version thrown together for the PSP (it exists for that platform, among others) but was also in the arcades. It's a pretty decent game. Nice music and effects, also.

My only gripe is the infinite continues it offers.

Although they share the same name and similar concepts, the arcade version is actually much different than what is found here and in the PSP Battle Collection.

Just needed to point that out as a fan. :)

the issue i have is the arcade and other versions you can hit the buttons fast and kill off ships as fast as you can tap the buttons. this version the input doesnt work and cant be rapidly tapped and thus the game is much different to play, and not fun for me.

Yes, classic mode is a bad conversion, it is to fast in the lite version, and unplayable with the offered controls! It's sooooo sad! I remember that game very well, it was my favorite arcade game back in 1982.

yup, they proper and fully screwed up the controls .. why namco? its as responsive as a dead badger :(

only reason mame isnt available on appstore is so these so called pro game companies can screw people over like this with half cut remakes.

why dont the likes of atari, namco and capcom just all collaborate, realease 'game packs' of classic titles for a reasonable fee and have mame bundled with them. would have far more respect for these guys and possibly buy these games id like to actually own.

When I spoke with the Namco group on the phone, they indicated that the travel speed of the ship/turret is the same as the arcade. One can move a slider across the iPhone's screen faster than the arcade machine's stick moved the ship across the CRT. Hence the lag.

They can say whatever they want, it is unplayable with the slider. Your finger and the ship do not move in a unified state. It is a poor excuse to sloppy controls. Making the lag intentional just proves how shoddy of a job they did here. This game requires precision, and by removing it you leave it the unplayable mess found here. There is no nudging of the controls whatsoever to pull off that single shot. Namco obviously released this for the people who don't know any better to purchase, especially judging from the laughable positive reviews it is getting.

Bottomline - I urge all hardcore fans to stay far away. I love Namco and their classics to death but this is a horrific port. Classic Galaga is poorly done even besides the controls.

All three control methods are inadequate. Don't buy this.

    MacMAME + original Galaga FTW!
