UniWar 1.0.1 and an Exclusive Look at Future Updates

posted April 28th, 2009 9:08 PM EST by Eli Hodapp in $2.99, Exclusives, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Strategy

3441544531_1d56b47a47jpgA few weeks ago I reviewed Xpressed's UniWar [App Store] and while it exceeded all of my expectations for a good turn based strategy game on the iPhone, it wasn't without its flaws. Last night UniWar 1.0.1 hit the App Store--The first of a set of two updates aimed at squashing bugs, adding functionality, and addressing the issues brought up by the UniWar community.

The most notable changes of 1.0.1 are all maps in both VS and Solo modes will be unlocked by default, adding much needed flexibility to playing individual maps without needing to worry about progression through the game. Also, while competing online in multiplayer battles, the default time limit is set to one day, but still can be changed to ten minutes.

While these two changes are minor, they're nothing compared to what Xpressed had in store for us in our exclusive first look at their next update. The biggest complaint we saw on our forums was the lack of adjustable difficulty when fighting the AI opponent. Veterans of turn  based strategy games felt it was too easy, and people new to the genre thought it was too difficult. The next version of UniWar will feature three adjustable levels of difficulty, which hopefully will allow for players of all skill levels to enjoy the single player game.

3442358858_a3de202dbdjpgUniWar's online component is also being greatly enhanced. In my review I mentioned how I liked the email alert system, but felt it was far too spammy for my tastes as an average game would produce upwards of 25 emails. Thankfully, soon we'll be able to choose two new options for how alerts are handled. Aside from the standard alert system as it exists now, players can also have the UniWar servers only send you an email when there are 30 minutes left in your turn as well as disabling notifications completely while logged in.

The notification changes go hand in hand with the new 3 minute "real-time" game mode for faster multiplayer games, but don't worry if you get distracted and miss a turn. Instead of being kicked from a game for not responding within the time limit of your turn, UniWar will allow for three skips per game before a player is at risk of being booted. For players who have found themselves enjoying the team based multiplayer maps, Xpressed is adding the ability to only chat with your team, as well as the standard chat system as it exists now.

Last, but certainly not least, are options to toggle both the sound and music, which will allow players to listen to their own songs and podcasts while waging war against their human or AI opponents.

UniWar has been a surprise success, and at at the initial launch price of 99¢ it skyrocketed up the sales charts. Since then Xpressed has raised the price to $2.99, but with one update already released and another fantastic one on the way, UniWar is still an amazing value even at the incresed price point.

This and iDracula are the only two games I play regularly on my iPod Touch. (and Snowball Touch, of course.)

I was kind of hoping performance would get an upgrade of some kind. Waiting for the AI to move is painful in the larger battles and the calculation time on attacks gets slow for a reason I can't understand.

I haven't touched online play and since I have a 1st gen iPod Touch and since I'm playing this at opportune moments, I haven't heard the sound or music yet, to be honest. :o )

I also enjoy the solo campaign. I'd like to see that continue. Great game.

I also have not ventured into the online play, for when i sit down and play it, i normally do not have wifi access for my ipod

so i would like to see a solo skirmish mode added
    and or more solo missions

i am almost done with the solo missions, and love the game
    haven't updated it yet

Any word on if he'll make the multi-player maps available for solo play? I don't play online, and the 19 maps for solo play do get old after a while.

  • Rerun

I do have to say I love this game, but there's a few tweaks I hope to see come down the line. Someday.

One, the AI isn't so bright. Specifically the enemy doesn't seem to employ half their tactics, or at least does so sparingly. I rarely see AI Titans teleport or Khareleans (however it's spelled) burrow. I know that's an incredibly difficult thing to program and balance, so I'll take what I can get of course.

Two, as was said before the lag in solo play can be a deal killer on huge maps or with huge armies.

Three, multiplayer is fun, though I'd like a way to turn chat off entirely. Some of the playerbase is, well... We all know how online games can be some times.

Hope to be playing for a long time to come..

It seems they're slowly address most of the quirks. I'm also hoping to see the CPU turn time glitch fixed.

The this game is the definitive iPhone/Touch online experience.

The game is really cool. To all the people not playing online - you're missing out A LOT! And that's coming from somebody who isn't usually into online gaming. I love the "correspondence chess" type battle, where you can take several hours for a turn.

I can't understand why anyone hasn't picked this game up yet. A bunch of us here at the office are addicted.

Also, to everyone not playing multiplayer, you're missing out. The multiplayer experience is fantastic, especially if you're playing with friends. I even played my boss, and it's helped us get to know each other. Seriously, try it.

I love this game. Online is simply addicting and the campaign is pretty good so far (on mission 19). The only real big problem is that that the game is so slow in single player when there's a lot characters on screen when it's the computer's turn, it gets ridiculous to the point where I quickly make my move, then go do something for 5 minutes, come back and hope the computer is finished. They need to fix this quickly, it brings the single player game down A LOT.

I'm totally hooked on this game. Look me up online if you want a game: wargizmo. Agree that the single player is a bit slow, you really have to be doing something else while waiting for the computer to go, but the multiplayer is a blast and the game seems fairly well balanced except on a couple of maps.

Because I know the Devs read this site, here's my suggestions for future patches:
    - random race selection
    - ability to choose turn length when creating random game
    - turn length displayed in join game list
    - first move should be random rather than just going to the person who made the game
    - in game volume control
    - ability to lock screen on either horizontal or vertical mode
    - you shouldn't be able to choose your opponent's race in rated games
    - you shouldn't be able to get points from beating bots
    - ability to access current games list from in game rather than having to go back to the main menu.

They need to stop allowing hosts to be a certain race and then not allowing the joining person to be the same race... or only 1 other race. These people obviously know the map and know that their race has a huge advantage over another.

    MUST HAVE:
allow joining people to preview the map in the game lobby.

The new update is hardly enough to say it's worth the 2.99 price, IMO of course.

Great game, maybe the best online iPhone game there is. Love that you can have 20 games going with long time limits and keep checking which one's ready for a move. Not crazy about some of the short time limit players who go ballistic if you take 8 minutes to make a move in a 10 minute game, but I guess I don't have to play that way.

One multiplayer question, does anyone else find Sapiens to be overpowered against Titans? As long as you keep producing engineers you seem to be able to completely cripple them on most maps (vs bots and real players.) Maybe that's just who my opponents have been.

Also forgot to mention, I found that if you use multiple accounts you can have 20 games going EACH.

Ditto on the need to preview a map when joining an online game. I keep having to go through the steps of starting a new game just to see what the map looks like on the game I want to join.

On a side note, is there any possible way to beat the Titans on the Land Bridge map?

I've got to say that you haven't really played UniWar if you haven't played multiplayer online. I was meh on the game, but multiplayer was a revelation to me.

They put a lot of thought and polish into how to make it fun and quick-moving, and it went from meh to yeh for me in the space of two or three games.

I might like more single-player campaigns too, but I have to admit, having played online I don't know if I'd be interested in anything else anymore.

    This. Game. Rocks.

On a side note, an earlier thread said they didn't play online because they don't have wifi access, but you don't need wifi to play this online.

I disagree with the sapiens v titans comment. Have used the titan engineers to knock atack the sapien ones. As long as the sapien engineers are shot before they can get close they are harmless enough
