Updated graphics

A few days ago we previewed the classic game of Boulder Dash for the iPhone. Boulder Dash was a game that was originally released in 1984 for a number of home computer platforms such as the Commodore 64 and Apple II.

As seems to be the case with many classic ports, several of our readers were disappointed that the game included only enhanced graphics rather than the original set.

First Star Software's founder and president Richard Spitalny noted these concerns and revealed in a comment that the company will be including a menu-selectable "Retro" mode in the game.

Based on the concerns expressed by some of you, we (First Star Software) have decided to 'let the cat out of the bag', so to speak, and include the 'retro' mode/option as a menu item, rather than including it as an 'Easter egg' as originally intended.

Original graphics also included in iPhone version.

Richard was kind enough to send on some screenshots of the retro mode though their publisher Chillingo. The game reportedly plays otherwise identically with 3 different controls modes as we previously detailed.

Of course, those who don't have an unnatural love of 4-bit graphics can choose to play with the updated graphics (earlier screenshots). The game has not yet been released but should be coming soon.

THAT'S ROCKFORD. Okay, I forgive you, Richard. My old favourite Boulder Dash is really in there just as I remember it. Please tell me the original music and sound effects are in there, too. Then I can officially call this a proper Boulder Dash and feel no guilt about it. :D

    wow, cool

at first I was not interested in this port of boulder dash, but now that there is retro mode I will definitely buy it

I absolutely loved boulder dash on my C64, and still play it sometimes on the emulator

I'd really like to see someone port 'Bounty Bob to the Rescue'. I spent many "productive" hours on that little platform game. I sometimes play it on an emulator but it's just not the same and I know I'd get a bigger kick playing it on my iPhone.

WOOHOO!!!! it's the original Boulderdash! Now I'll be buying it!!

I'm also hoping that the devs working on Archon (and hopefully M.U.L.E. too, but haven't heard anything on that yet...) will take notice and do likewise!

Now that's much better!! A proper Rockford in familiar looking surroundings, that's enough to change my opinion on buying this. Well done and thanks Richard for getting this info out to us.

Thank you all for your continued (and enthusiastic) interest in Boulder Dash. Indeed the original sfx are used whether you play with 'retro' or 'updated' graphics. The original theme music is played while in the 'boot sequence' (as was the case in the original), we've also included a great 'remix' during gameplay. (Volumes for SFX and Music are controlled individually.)

Hkiphone:The game IS scheduled for a worldwide release.

I'd actually love them to use the Amiga graphics in Archon. Would be great.

Great news! Can't wait to get this.
Is the music/sound in the retro mode the same sound from the C64 version for example? Would love that.
Consider it bought anway - I love this game!!

    Great feedback from the publishers!!

Wohooo! Okay, I know I moaned a lot when I saw the 'enhanced' graphics (they just don't jive with me.) But these retro graphics? Awesome. Totally Awesome. Thanks for the feedback Richard.

I'm buying it soon as it drops. This was one of *the* best games way back on the c64.

I'm sure I'll never play the 'retro' version. I loved the original, but seriously it's hard to look at now. It was the game play that was great, not the lousy graphics.

Now where is Montezuma's Revenge and Hall of the Mountain King?

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for confirming that it will be a global release! As you could probably tell, I'm really fired up to play this again in it's pure classic form.
But I'll give the new look a go too, since your guys must have thought it's worthwhile doing so.

Ah well, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool retrogamer. This game has a lot of nostalgia value for me. ..that, and I don't like the new graphics. Personally, if I did new graphics, they would look a lot like the old ones ..just some subtle shading and at the phones' proper resolution, so it's not blocky.

But hey, I always loved Boulderdash, so I have strong opinions. :) Actually I miss the old score-board font. Any chance of that in the retro-mode guys? That would look cool. :D

Great to see this thread continuing. :-)

Thank you all for the kind words about Boulder Dash and sharing memories. For me, as well, it has always been about the gameplay; but, I must admit, it really is fun playing the game with the original graphics on the iPhone/iPod touch. I'm sorry to say that we are not replicating the font in 'retro' mode; but, the original sfx ARE included.

Only just seen these, and as a huge fan of the original (including interviewing Peter Liepa about his creation for Retro Gamer a few years back), I applaud the retro graphics mode (although the modern one pales in comparison to the much prettier Boulder Dash Rocks), but find the control method worrying.

The original game was primarily a joystick controlled effort, and was subtly fine-tuned. Although the various configs shown elsewhere seem OK (although separating controls into vertical and horizontal placement just seems strange), the omission of a fire button is baffling.

The original Boulder Dash enabled you to dig a space ahead, without moving, and this was utterly essential in doing your best in many of its levels. Without that mechanism, the subtleties of the gameplay are ruined, and so I sincerely hope that these shots are not representative of the final control methods. Given that Namco is getting this bang-on with its iPhone games, it'd be a huge shame if Boulder Dash was compromised for no reason. (I'll also be interested to see if Liepa's inertia-based scrolling from the Atari and C64 versions is retained, or if it uses the generally inferior 'centre on Rockford' approach of the PC port.)

Turns out the hand's the fire button, although why one of these articles couldn't have mentioned that, I don't know. Anyway, looking forward to this much more now.
