Gameloft Drops Price of 'Terminator Salvation' and 'Siberian Strike'

posted May 11th, 2009 8:15 AM EST by arn in Sales

Gameloft has dropped the prices on their just-released games Terminator Salvation [App Store, $5.99] and Siberian Strike [App Store, $2.99]. Both games debuted in the past two weeks and were originally priced at $9.99 and $5.99 respectively.

Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation was Gameloft's movie tie-in game that offered a 3D shooter set in the Terminator world. While the game was a very high quality production with good controls, the short (2-3 hour) gameplay time may have scared off casual gamers at its original price.

Siberian Strike

Meanwhile, Gameloft's Siberian Strike is a vertical scrolling shooter set in the 1940s. Gameplay involves dodging enemy fire and laying waste to the waves of enemy aircraft that dance across the screen, and the boss aircraft at the end of each level. The destruction of certain enemies releases power-ups than can be picked up to enhance weapons and summon wingman reinforcements.

The game received somewhat mixed forum reviews at its original $5.99 price.

I caved....quite entertaining all said. 3D doesn't disturb me all that much, mind you I didn't play the original. The tilt controls are not a patch on iFighter. Why can't Gameloft of all companies do as well on that? So I have resorted to touch which is fiddly. You can't see the hits your plane takes, and whether you use your left or right finger/thumb for controlling the plane, you will at some point need to reach for either bomb or super shot, and then your left cack-handed.
If they sort out the tilt controls and make them as smooth as iFighter (they really have no excuse not to) then this would be a great game. As is its just mediocre...

the price drop soo soon is kind of annoying. Gameloft's history has shown they will eventually drop the price anyway. its too bad they don't have kick backs on itunes for such a quick turn-around. either way Terminator was worth it at $9.99 and definitely something to not think twice on with a new price drop.

Any other game, and I would be really mad at such a quick price drop. Terminator would be worth $20 though, so I still know I got a good deal at $10. Four dollars isn't that much anyway. I'd gladly pay it to get the game earlier.

You people drive me up a wall requesting a refund when the price drops. There is no such policy, and if there was, they wouldn't have lowered the price! My favorite is when people review the game poorly because they feel like they've lost money on a price drop. I've seen people change their original review of 5 stars down to 1 based on the price drop alone. What a ridiculous, self-absorbed sense of entitlement some people have.

When the price increases after a sale, do you give the publisher more money, or raise your rating? No. Now STFU.

Hmm interesting, they must not be doing well on the sales as they had hoped. I bought iFighter and the tilt controlls are better then most id agree with that and at a price point of 99c you cant go wrong.. if Siberian Strike was say 1.99 then id buy it also but from the reviews the controls don't seem to be too good and plus the price point of 2.99 which is 2 dollars more expensive then iFighter. i dont see a reason why i should buy it.
Im not being a tight-butt, im just comparing to whats out there at the moment.
Terminator looks good but id rather get a lite version first before i spend more then 5 dollars and probably find out its something i might not like. There should be a lite version for all high priced apps imho

the iFight released and target the price on $2.99, so no doubt Siberian Strike needs to adjust the price in order to beat them.

Not sure why Terminator Salvation's price will drop, eventually the movie will be up soon, and the price only drops after the movie gone.

As a fellow iPhone developer, this is getting quite disturbing. As Arn already mentionned on his blog this will getting harder for small indie developement to make any kind of money out of the AppStore.

The more those big developer such as EA, GameLoft drop their price, the harder it will be for us to put a higher price. I know as an indie developer I couldnt go and charge premium price such at $9.99, $5.99. But though for a high quality games I could go up to $2.99. But with this kind of pricing, it will be hard to convince people for example buy my shmup at $2.99 compare to Siberian Strike from GameLoft.

Soon I guess indie will have no choice to sell everything at $0.99 or simply make our apps/games for free (which will make many of us leave as it wont be a sustainable business).

Id like to hear the opinion of other developer what they think about this situation.

Well I've lent my lesson, next time I'll wait until a price drop before I buy anything else, it will also give me the time to really think about if I really want an App or not. Lowering prices shortly after launch seems to be a common trend for developers to cash in on impulse buyers.

What's really troublesome is that Gameloft always goes on about how they avoid "the race to the bottom" and yet this isn't the first time they have cut price on one of their iTouch/Phone offerings by 40%.

    40%!!

I mean...honestly...how is that not "racing to the bottom" albeit in a slightly different manner?

As for the indie developers, part of the current difficulty they now face in regards to EA and Gameloft cutting price is really their own fault. They were among the first to "race to the bottom", and they are the most vocal in fueling the foolish and completely wrongheaded perception that the App Store totally goes against "normal" laws of selling a product, economics, and market dynamics. And now, sadly, the "big" companies are also buying into this foolish notion more and more. It's ridiculous and quite frankly an unsustainable model.

Consumers are demanding better and better products with higher production values, but at the same time the expectation among them, fueled by silly developers, has become to expect low low prices always. Rock bottom prices. And it just hurts the bottom line completely for developers. The counter to that that some espouse is that developers will make up for potential lost revenue when cutting price by selling larger amounts, but that winds up not occurring most of the time and the very idea amounts to a fool's errand.

And developers STILL do it. It's mind boggling that they keep going to the well of a failed strategy over and over again. And notice how EA and Gameloft are now getting into the act. No, they aren't dropping to a buck...but they're dropping by up to 40% in less than a couple of weeks. That's just...it's insanity as a business practice, especially considering that there is STILL demand at the original price point. Why would you willingly lower price if there is STILL a massive amount of demand at the original price point? And if needing to lower price, why not try, say, 20-25% instead of 40%, then as that 20%-25% price cut well runs dry cut from original price by 40%, as has proven to be a sound strategy employed by Vivendi (Crash Nitro Kart) and Sega (Super Monkey Ball)?

I just don't understand the rationale behind the business decisions far too many iTouch/Phone game developers make.

I baught Terminator at the $10 price point and I feel I got my $10 dollars worth. However, seeing that Gameloft drops prices so soon after release may convince me just to wait next time. So in that regard a price drop so soon may work against them in the future. The sales may have gone up closer to the movie release.

I also see alot of adds for Iphone games on sites dedicated to Iphone. Maybe its time to start advertising on video game sites like Gamespot. Most people I show the games I have on my Ipod touch don't even know they were available. I use my Ipod mostly for games now. I have allways had a handheld system and noe Ipod Touch is my favorite.

I generally agree with you about price drops. That's the nature of the app store. It drives me crazy when people whine that a $4.99 game that's been out for a month is now $2.99.

However the Terminator drop is one that would have bothered me if I'd bought the game. From $10 to $3 a week later is pretty drastic-- I'd have to assume this means the game barely sold at all, since it certainly makes the game look like a flop.

Gameloft obviously doesn't have to acknowledge customers who feel irritated over this, but I think it would be a smart move on their part to give them something if they write to complain (like another free Gameloft game, or something.)

oh noes, then you'll have to either settle for what pricing the market is willing to bear or go do something else with your time. why lament the impossible. you can't charge more than people are willing to pay, that's just how commerce works. well you can, but only a few impatient twits will buy it. or you can adjust your pricing to where you get the higher number of purchases that actually makes you a good profit. or if you don't think it's a fair price, you can keep your app to yourself. *shrug*

some devs like to moan about supposedly "cheap" consumers, but i don't like the attitude some app developers have that makes them think they're entitled to a lot of my money just because they made an app. hey congrats on your coding ability (if it's actually a worthwhile, polished app, which few are) but i may choose not to buy it because I may not find it worth the asking price. that's life, buddy. either you sell it at a price we find acceptable or you don't do much business. it works both ways -- you try to sell us on why your product is worth our money, and we decide when we feel the price is appealing enough to buy. that's what makes it commerce & trade, and not authoritarian monopoly.

some devs like to moan about supposedly "cheap" consumers, but i don't like the attitude some app developers have that makes them think they're entitled to a lot of my money just because they made an app. hey congrats on your coding ability (if it's actually a worthwhile, polished app, which few are) but i may choose not to buy it because I may not find it worth the asking price. that's life, buddy. either you sell it at a price we find acceptable or you don't do much business. it works both ways -- you try to sell us on why your product is worth our money, and we decide when we feel the price is appealing enough to buy. that's what makes it commerce & trade, and not authoritarian monopoly.

I wanted in on this game but $10 was a bit much for me to pay for -2 hours. At $6 it make sit an easier buy. I think it also makes it more attractive as an impulse buy for this type.

So far worth the $6 and it's a window as to what we'll see developers doing with the iPhone. If the can make the controls for Bioshock work as well then count me in. Although I would like to see high profile games from the big developers that play to the iPhone's strenght's rather than portable versions of console-type games. wonder if we'll see a Raving Rabbids game designed soley for the iphone. For now where's my Star Defense and Worms?!

Sad, sad little boy...If mommy asked you want STFU stood for and you told her do you think she'd say. "Oh how nice?" Wait, don't answer that...I might make you say something even more stupid and juvenile than STFU...
