If the phone has a feature, like accelerometer, you don't have to use it in your game if it doesn't work there. And on rails? Going to skip and forget this game so fast...

With Carmack involved, we'll be guaranteed a technical tour de force. The man is a master. I am a little concerned over the controls though.

As soon as I saw the pics and read about accelerometer controls, I thought this would most probably be on rails. Not that it's a bad thing, I love gallery shooters, provided they are challenging and well designed. I suspect that id will offer an increased degree of control compared to other tap to shoot games.

Oh, and "as it stands", the iDevice is more of a casual platform. Just like Apple wants it to be. After all, it's the DS that's making the big bucks.

Great news!

I just hope that since Carmack is involved, he'll make sure the frame rate is decent. Too many games on iPhone (especially shooters) suffer from really poor frame rate.

i am worried with the controls... my experience with accelerometer fps controls so far had been a horrible experience.

i am also worried about the gameplay. this might not have enough hours of gameplay unlike the classics.

it still looks pretty badass though

Accelerometer controlled movement AND aiming?

How does that even work out?

I mean...accelerometer movement and touch aiming I can see, but how can you move AND aim at the same time using JUST the motion sensor?

Akira01, I don't get where you get that the iPhone is for casuals from that statement. And Carmack did go back to Wolf3D primarily as an easy way to prototype the control method for FPS games for the iPhone ..then found it so much fun he became enthusiastic about porting all the classic titles. From what I've read it sounds very much like he's porting the back catalogue because he's enthusiastic about giving them a new life on the iPhone. (There might be something of not wanting to leave it to the third parties who so often do a half-assed job of porting them too.) I don't think there's any reflection on the iPhone audience to be taken from this.

Further, I would say that mobile gaming itself is inherently more casual ..because it's often (though not always) done when someone has bits of spare time. So to consider these titles as casual games probably has more to do with the situations the devices is used in, rather than the users themselves. It makes sense to make allowances for casual use in the way you design for the iPhone: like the way all levels in Wolf3D are unlocked from the very first use.
