Well, it's the 1 year anniversary of this announcement, still no DTD. It would have been pretty cool, but I think it's safe to write it off at this point, no?

As a connoisseur of TD games, this is indeed one of the best.

*However* none have come out that are as good as the more developed originals made in the warcraft 3 engine as mods.

Why? Multiplayer. Team based TD was, and still is, way more engaging than these single player experiences.

A perfect $.99-$1.99 game that will rake in the sales for its replayability. I'll be picking it up despite having enough TD games.

Anyone who's complaining that this is "just another TD game" has obviously never played this one. It may look simplistic, but there is actually a great deal of trial/error and strategy involved, and the upper difficulty levels are extremely challenging.

For starters, it's nothing like Fieldrunners (which I think is great too), because each wave of attackers in Fieldrunners waits until you've finished off the previous wave. That's not what happens in Desktop TD. You have a certain amount of time before the next wave, and it comes in regardless of whether other "creeps" are still in the field. You can actually start waves early as well, and in fact this is a big part of how you increase your score (you get bonus points for starting waves early).

It's also completely different from preset path-based TD games like geoDefense and the (awesome) new StarDefense, since there is essentially no path design element in those games (the only strategy is how best to place your towers around the path).

WIth Desktop TD, I went through several different "maze" designs over a period of several weeks, and after I'd settled on one, it took several more weeks to tweak it and get the correct timing for triggering next waves. The element of "juggling" (blocking and unblocking alternative exits to your maze to change the direction of creeps) also comes into play, and is quite tricky as well, because every time you sell a tower, it takes a little bit longer to erase it (so you must be conservative about this, and also expect the increasing delay and take it into account). There's no editing the maze while the game is paused, so you have to pull this all off in real time.

If the iPhone version manages to be a faithful translation of the original, this will easily be one of the best TD games on the platform, regardless of how many other TD games already exist. Any true connoisseur of TD games knows this is one of the best ones ever made.

@arn -
thanks. Checked at 148apps.com and iTunes, first thought i was crazy reading that date, but now i see it was just for the latest version ... should have just checked your archive :)
Well anyway, Fieldrunners entered the Appstore a few weeks after that. I already laid out a iPhone-fitting control scheme, i´m interested if in the end it will be better than my version .. ;)
If i´m right (you can correct me again) the Tower Defense Hype hadn´t happened before Fieldrunners - right?

I actually contacted Paul Preece in late 2008 to convince him to release this classic within a few weeks in the App store. I had contacts to then free developers.
At first he was interested but when he realized i dont program myself and was just organzing i never heard from him again.
I was absolutely sure that the port would sell like hot cakes.
On March 13th, 2009 Fieldrunners entered the ring.
He could have had a big hit before that.

I could still kick myself for not being more ___ (insert fitting word here, my english is not that good and its late here in germany) ...
