However, I quickly discovered the secret to just "beating" (although not with the maximum star amounts) the levels - as the blocks stack up, everything not up on the screen is then "safe" and won't collapse if you can't see it. As soon as I discovered this, I put minimal effort into actually stacking the blocks properly and instead just focused on stacking them well enough for me to be able to move them "off screen" and work on new ones. After I did that, I won every single time bonus. Haven't played the second one yet, but it looks like a much fuller game. I enjoyed the original, but only because it was tough at first.
