'Minigore' Chapter 2 Update Released

posted October 8th, 2009 5:22 PM EST by Eli Hodapp in $0.99, Action, Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Shooter

Screen shot 2009-10-08 at 4.13.21 PMAfter a dramatic two month wait, the first Minigore [App Store] update was approved this afternoon. Mountain Sheep originally intended on doing episodic content updates similar to Pocket God, but unforeseen issues with Apple's approval process resulted in these updates being rolled out much slower than originally anticipated.

Minigore is a dual stick survival shooter similar to iDracula loaded with fantastic music, a charming cartoon-like art style, and random voice-over commentary from the game's protagonist, John Gore. In the game, you mow down armies of furries with your machine gun for as long as you can stay alive. For more detail on the gameplay, take a look at our review.

Minigore 1.1 brings a number of changes to the table, including the integration of OpenFeint for online scoring. You also have a furry "radar" of sorts, as incoming furries are indicated by small icons bordering the screen showing which direction they're coming from. The game also saves your progress when you quit, and restores your game when you load it again.

Aside from the standard flaming furry, a giant flaming furry was also added along with some new sound effects, voice acting, and animations. John Gore's health was also increased, and he can take one more hit before dying.

While this update introduces a hefty helping of gameplay tweaks and bug fixes, it also introduced two substantial bugs. Forum members are reporting that if you flip the screen orientation in the options, the game will crash and the only thing you can do to fix it is reinstall the game. Also, if you don't enable OpenFeint when it first offers, you will need to reinstall the game to get the prompt again.

Mountain Sheep has had ambitious plans for the future of Minigore, and recently added another 99 players to their beta testing pool. It's hard to have worse luck than they've already had with being able to get these updates out the door, so hopefully future updates to the game will have fewer problems making their way through Apple and getting on to the App Store.

Hmmm that's not much considering how much time they have had to make this update. Where is envirobear? I don't care about furry radar or openfeint, all I want is envirobear.

Phew, that was a good 60 days from the first submit of the update.

The flip screen bug is embarrassing, but with the 99 beta test accounts that shouldn't happen again. We're hard at work on the next versions, announcements will appear at http://minigore.blogspot.com and the Touch Arcade Forums.

Looking forward to all feedback, positive and negative. :)

The article makes it sound like it was Apple's fault, when it was in fact the developers who submitted buggy updates that failed review. At least as far as I understood it.

Minigore is a highly polished game (best of its kind) but lacks depth, making it feel like a demo. I'm glad they got the price right but the game just made me want more and got to repetitive like idracula did. 7 days and Alive 4 ever took the idracula formula in the right direction by adding goals to make the game feel more fully featured and kill some of the repetition.

  • blackHorse

Time to fire some programmers, eh? Some companies create full games in two months...

Lets make this clear: as the developer, we do not blame Apple for the delay.

Obviously they need to stop any software that crashes, but the process isn't that clear cut. The flood of applications is huge and everyone and their uncle resubmitted their apps this summer to take advantage of the added search keyword functionality. I'm sure things get smoother going forward, right now it's a bit of a black box but both sides keep getting better at it.

If you felt frustrated waiting for a $0.99 game to get an update, imagine how we felt when any changes we made took two strikes and two months to materialize.

It's not the money, it's the broken hearts - something we'll work hard to fix.

  • kalel39

Ive moved on from this game. Way over it. The delayed update is to blame for that.

    The style is their treasure.
And the only reason, why this game still is on my iPhone :)
But the style is too good ;)
Hope, there will be a true update soon,
    including something called content.

i wouldnt call it "bad luck" to get updates out, apple may have been slow, but updates were previously denied because of bugs, now this version was able to slip through with more bugs. this is a developer issue. i think the devs of this game were way too talkative about what content they intended to come out with and overhyped their own game in an overambitious way. like its been said before, the game, as it is, is ok for a few minute timekiller, but they promised soooooo much and its come back to bite them...sure they did a bunch of initial sales, but i doubt they'll grab any newcomers with this so-called "update."

Didn't like the game, deleted the game after a month, redownloaded it and now its pretty fun. Congrats on getting the update out.

I would actually blame Apple is this part- it takes them a month to tell the devs that the game isn't functioning at all (game bugs) and then it takes another month that something else has happened.. If it takes a week or two to review, why tell the devs a month later. Then again, I haven't been following the thread.

Where's the TD game that this is using some assets from? That "Fullgore" looked way more interesting than this, updates pending or no.

What bothers me most--and this is entirely at the feet of the developers, is the over-promising. All of us who purchased the game in the expectations that there would be more to it--that more was already in the works--now get to be incredibly frustrated. Why submit a 1.1 update when it was 2.0 that was broken? How is it that the 1.1 update could have been submitted with a show-stopping bug that will destroy everyone who installed it on an iPhone and set the orientation to keep the headphones out of the way.

The problem is the lack of communication, but mostly the hype. Not only has it not lived up to it in terms of future releases, it hasn't even lived up to it's original promise. With only one screen of options, how on earth could this release have made it through any testing at all? Did anyone even try it on an iPhone?

So many questions, but one thing is clear: if the Developer spent half as much time and money on quality as it did on marketing, this game would be so great it wouldn't need the marketing to begin with.

I feel tricked, and I'm not the only one.

Still though, cute graphics. Those furries move really nicely. But I still feel cheated--not out of $.99--the game was fine for that--but for the steady stream of teasing. Broken hearts is right, jouni, but in this case, you guys really did it to yourselves. Everyone is playing by the same rules, however messed up and opaque--but you're still on your own for putting the carriage so far in front of the horse.

And I still don't feel better. Have to wait for 1.1.1 for that.

I keep coming back to the this game – it's smooth, it's pretty, easy to pick up and simple. I look forward to updates, but I paid my 99¢ for what was there, then, and the updates that come out in the meantime are great, and make my purchase worth that much more, and make me want to purchase from the developers if they put something else up for sale in the future.

I don't get the sense of entitlement the iPhone app buyers have; from buyers of the CNN app complaining about ads showing up in their news, to players of Minigore complaining that the app wasn't updated as promptly as it might have been.

It's more than a little obnoxious.

Isaac, I agree. It's a $1 game, for crying out loud!

Sure, it'd be cool to have maybe a progression of levels or goals, but seriously, for $1, and getting MORE content for free is great!!! Keep it up, jouni. I look forward to future updates, for a $1 game!

    Guys - let's not lose perspective here - it is a 99c game! Not a $100 game - a $1 game!

If I play it for 10 minutes and enjoy it then I have got my monies worth. Who cares if the updates are slow coming. How many of you are programmers and actually have an understanding of how much a 'simple' game like this actually takes to build - let me tell you, it is a lot to make something this polished.

Mistakes happen - get over it. Great game, I love it! Looking forward to future updates - even if they come slowly :)

Alright. First, I didn't mean to sound like another entitled iPhone owner. I just wanted to rake the developer over the coals a little bit because I just had high expectations largely generated by their own PR campaign. That said, my rating on the iTunes store doesn't reflect my disappointment. I just had to vent somewhere and I figured this was a reasonable forum because I was likely to find similar sentiment and, for the most part, those waiting for new content to buy the game aren't waiting for this one and those reading this forum are a select group which includes at least one developer.

I will submit that the graphics are amazingly smooth, and screen flipping frustrations aside, the controls are excellent, the voice acting is funny, and the look is unique and out-of-this-world. I really haven't seen anything quite like it and I'm a huge fan.

The startup screen indicates a larger plot, the iTunes App-Store page promises one, and I eagerly await one still. I just wish I wasn't checking the app-store all the time and that this update wasn't what I was expecting, but that only proves I love what's here and I want more of it.

They promised additional content and didn't come through, so it's a bust. Plus the Openfeint is screwed up. When it comes to beta testing, you get what you pay for. It shows this game was done on the cheap.

Who said this game sucks really doesn't make any sense at all, the first reason of course is, it's a $0.99 dollar game ! Plus I liked it actually better then a lot of expensive games, it's one of the best .99 cents I've spent on the App Store. Of course I'd like the second version the have more Maps, Characters and weapons, possibly careers would be nice too.

who cares if it was only 99 cents... it's in the principle of matters that they made the mistake. if they didn't promise updates we wouldn't have this argument, but they did and there lies the problem.
if they were to put out another game they will not get the support they got with this one unless they released a more or less "finished" game, with no promises that they cannot keep.
it's too bad because you know they had good intentions but things did not pan out, the capacity to do so wasn't there to begin with.
app store buyers(judging from reviews) are unforgiving, these are their customers and hopefully they learn from this mistake.

Everyone calm down. The issue of slow updates is partly the dev's fault (submitting faulty updates)

But. We would have had the update sooner if it didn't take Apple a whole month to tell the developers that the update crashed.

Also, I'm not sure how much I can say, but I'll tell you this:

I can only speak for myself, but I don't feel cheated over spending 99 cents for the game. It's more of a disenchantment over the game not living up to the phenomenal hype (going back to before the game was even released) and not delivering on the promise from the updates.

If the updates were a pleasant surprise... Great. It's that we've been told over and over by the developers and defenders what a great game this will be that gets to me.

That said. Good controls, good art direction... though really, aren't the "furries" just Domokun knockoffs?

Yeah it would all be so much quicker if Apple would tell the developer sooner that they handed in a buggy piece of crap.

But Minigore started with promises of frequent updates. It didn't deliver for well over two months and then all I got was the fact that I'm unable to play AT ALL anymore (not that I did in the first place after one week).

I won't buy Hardgore if it ever comes out, out of principle. This developer has scorched the earth for me. He has lost my trust. He kept promising more and more on the forums instead of sitting his ass down and programming. I know how that is. I've also let people down in the past. Who's without fault, you know.

Even more so I now think that the pictures he posted of Hardgore are mere fabrications, 3D renderings, and not even an alpha status version of Hardgore. On top of that I don't think that with his "manpower" or the lack thereof, he will be able to pull anything off that is of a larger scale than the Minigame that Minigore is. Oh wait - he didn't even manage to do that one right. Once there was more complexity to it, he failed.

It's so nice that there's now a way for Indie developers to enter the market. It's also nice that at 99 Cents you can buy and install games and throw them away like paper towels if you don't like them. But this is just what I keep talking about for well over a year now: if developers are unable to get their sh*t together they will ruin the platform more and more. There's already one commenter here who mentioned he didn't even pay for the app, yet played it. I can't stand those people who comment that it's 99 Cents. Yes it is, but that's what I paid for. A pill of malaria vaccine is also only 5 Cents. A condom is also only a buck. But it's supposed to WORK and there's supposed to be testing and there are to be STANDARDS of quality. If a game is simply boring after a while and didn't fit my taste, FINE. That's a matter of content and Minigore delivered exactly that. I was more than happy with it when it came out.

But the way the developer handles PR combined with the lack of Quality Assurance is more than negating any fun I had with the game in the first place. The amount of frustration I experienced through reading the TA forums is unbearably high. This is a big fail for the developer and like I said before I won't buy Hardgore.

Don't you dare start putting work into Hardgore now. I fully expect this release of Minigore to put a serious dent into sales of Minigore and the easy way out would be to drop it and start something new or better: develop Hardgore to publish it as a new game. I won't forget. I won't buy Hardgore unless Minigore got exactly what you promised before Hardgore is published.

Hey, don't bring us testers into this!

We picked up the bugs almost as soon as we received the build, but by then it had already been with apple for a while and the devs didn't think that it was worth re-submitting.

I didn't mention any testers. I said "there are supposed to be tests".

You comment seems to center around the fact that you are a tester now. Here, have a cookie.

I am a programmer. I understand how difficult it is not to procrastinate and actually work on something.

The developer (read: the single person who seems to be working on this game) should've worked on the program instead of vapor-waring the TA forums.

I'm totally pissed because I'm unable to play the game now. Besides, it's so great to have a radar because in the past you didn't see the furries coming from the direction directly under your fingers and the radar then showing said furries in the exactly same spot - under your fingers.

Compare that to "Meteor Blitz". It's Minigore done right without the endless, repetitive comments.
