'Goals!' Arcade Soccer Delivering Old School Action

posted December 10th, 2009 4:08 PM EST by arn in $0.99, Free, iPhone games, iPod touch games, Sports

842182_4For those looking for more of a old school arcade version of soccer than offered by FIFA, The Game Creators has recently released Goals! in both Pro and Lite versions. The game has drawn comparisons to a popular 90s soccer game Sensible Soccer and has been getting favorable reviews in our forums.

Goals! is a top down arcade soccer game that uses an on screen joystick and virtual buttons to control the action. The game has been discounted to $0.99 in the days since it's release and also offers a Lite version to try yourself.

The Pro version was originally released at $4.99 and has since dropped to $0.99.

You can see the action in this gameplay video:

Game is awesome, haven't had this much fun with a soccer game in a long time :)

I don’t care much about football (of any flavor), but I used to enjoy an Amiga soccer game that played just like this, if I understand what I’m looking at. You’d control the player with the ball, and hit the joystick button to pass or (attempt to) make a goal. Simple and intuitive.

  • SiDCrAzY

The joystick button is to move your player. On offense the B button is to kick and the A button is to pass. On defense the B button is to switch the player you are controlling and the A button is to slide(to attempt to take the ball away)

From the video it seems there is no "heading"? It is strange.

  • SiDCrAzY

You mean like a scoreboard? There is one in the actual game. Same as the screenshot shown on this article.

  • Eastern Bloc Party

Pretty sure they mean "heading" as in making contact with the ball by way of the head.

  • SiDCrAzY

Oops, not a big soccer fan. Don't know the terms and no I don't think this has "headings".

  • Pez

Yeah this reminds me of Sensible Soccer on the Amiga which was really fun though SS had like every single team on the planet.

  • Septimus

Doesn't look great, though at least it proves that Sensi Soccer could be done on the iPhone.

Come on Jon Hare! You know you want to release SS on the app store.

  • trnZ

It's a good game but... YES, we all want Sensible World Of Soccer on the iPhone, I think it could be groundbreaking. I would buy it even for 10$.

HELL YEAH.. Im going to buy this right away!!! Looks super great!!!!!!!!

BUT I ALSO WANT sensible world of soccer world edition, with the career mode, and the possebillities to buy players, and create a league and tournament with many of the clubs and leagues in the world... I used to love that game... WE WANT sensible soccer on ApoStore..

Maybe gameloft releases it.. But keep the classic geaphics, don't use new graphics..

This Goals! Game seems like a little version of SS, so im going to buy it NOW!!!! Wohoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

ps. Sorry for many wrong spelled words, and crappy english..

And u all knew i ment AppStore (and not ApoStore) :p

  • Zemar

This game got some REAL Potential! With a few fixes and som new features this could be a huge success. I love it as it is, but miss a league mode.

But, SWOS for iPhone would be AWESOME! With the Career mode and the players from 96/97 :)

We should write to the Codemasters to make them port SWOS to the iPhone. I would buy it for 15$!

  • Craig Grannell

Zemar has it right. If you want to see old Sensi stuff on iPhone, bug Codemasters about it, because they own the IP to the likes of SWOS and Cannon Fodder. Both would be great for iPhone (and, no, Grunts really doesn't count as far as CF goes).

  • MysteryBiro

This is OK, but it's a long way behind the classics like Sensi and Kick-Off2.. The lite version didn't convince me at all. I'd wait for something a bit better to come along... it surely will.

  • Adams Immersive

I suppose SS might be the very game I’m thinking of. The name doesn’t ring a bell, but a friend bought it, not me.
