Ridge Racer is my ultimate definition of a racer that is "on-rails." I know people have different definitions of that term, but when come up against AI cars/opponents in a Ridge Racer game, they have no personality. The do no react to your or their environment. They simply drive a predetermined route. They are like ghost cars. They will basically post the same time every time they cross the finish line. Ridge Racer is really only a glorified time trial game. I define Ridge Racer as "on-rails," because all of the computer controlled cars are on-rails.

Not paying 9.99 for this. This ought to be half the price of NFS:S, but Namco will probably charge more. And I will pass. Strange that this game is due out likely before the 23rd and haven't heard about it until now.

Huuuge Ridge Racer fan here, but looking at the Famitsu video is depressing. Ridge Racer is all about 60 fps, anything less is fail. The gameplay footage in that video looked to be considerably less than 60 fps. The game looks like a step down from the psp version in those screenshots too. I would have thought the game would look a bit nicer on a 3GS.

Will wait and see fingers crossed for a good version.

Wow. That was super harsh. I found their latest Pacman to be fantastic. I thought Pole Postion wasnt bad either if you're into retro racers.

Fail. 60fps or nothing for Ridge Racer.

Ace Combat isn't great (wish I had waited for the sale now) so don't hold out hopes for this, especially after seeing that footage.

  • Mark

I dont know what it is about ridge racer, but ever since i first layed eyes on it in the arcades all those years ago (the graphics looked amazing at the time) the game has has always seemed BORING as batshit to me. I mean it came out when Virtua Racing was the only real competition, and yet VR still whooped its ass in terms of adrenaline fuelled excitement even though it didnt look as good. I'm happy about it coming to the iphone simply because its such a famous game but lordy lord it is so mind numbingly boring. The scenery is boring, the track is boring, the cars are boring and to top it off you only get one track which you get to race backwards well whoopty do what a lame game. And to think the Japanese were lining up for weeks on the streets for this when it first got released on the PSP, what a laugh..

I bet this game will have in-app purchase such as, one new skin for the car, 7 new skins for the girl, and well... that's all... thanks for trying namco, but need for speed was already here; you're not getting one bite of the cake. first ace combat, now this ? I smell defeat... as long as these fu***s do not plan a soulcalibur on the iphone (and I mean one of the last, the 3 or the 4, like on the PSP) they'll get nothing from me, not a single penny. As a matter of fact, I might even steal them.

I have to say, that did look pret-ty chop chop in the framerate department.

PSP RR was so good, I think I'll skip this one; really doesn't look as good, and I don't need to play something that's inferior to something else I played.. in 2005.

It looks like it has potential, but they do need to work on the and the car models before release. Agreed about the wish for Ridge Racer Type 4 - that was by far the best of the series.

Nothing funny about it (also that lining up for weeks thing is a gross exaggeration) because Ridge Racer is one of the last, true arcade racers out there. Not like these pretenders, which have become more about avoiding traffic and gimmicks, licensed music rubbish and 'teh realz' rather than the simple joy of driving.

Proper arcade racers were about one thing, the joy of driving. In RR, everything from the colourful and distinct art direction (the devs weren't and still aren't afraid to use the colour blue, for example) to the handling were devised for this very one purpose.

I remember the first time it was released in the arcades in 93, it took everyone by storm and I don't know where you was but it absolutely trashed the likes of Virtua Racing, and for good reason. A good-looking, great sounding (you can't beat the soundtrack) racer that took the concept of drifting to another level.

With each iteration the devs have more or less kept those three aspects intact. The issue is everyone is now more interested in games that are simulations or (in the case of arcade racers) at least try to ape the look and feel of simulations. An absolute classic such as Outrun wouldn't be able to thrive in a stagnant market like we have today, and it is a real tragedy.

It has become bloody boring, and it's a shame that no one is interested in hurtling your car at top speed, mm from the wall as you turn it at an almost 90 degree angle around a corner.

Then again, one issue I have with modern RR is that it is far too easy to drift. To the extent that it feels on-rails. Before it was quite technical to perform the drift, a technique that was excelled in RRV on PS2. Now, you just swing out the back end and the car enters a 'locked-in drift' around the corners. Like the auto aim assist in FPS games on consoles. Can still be very satisfying, but not nearly as gratifying as it was once before.

As for this game on the iPhone, there doesn't seem to be much going for it. For one, and the most damaging, the framerate looks sub-30 which is inexcusable for an arcade racer. 60fps or bust, there is no inbetween.

The other damaging aspect is Namco (or rather Scamco) itself. Considering their pricing practices nowadays, across all platforms, no doubt the same rip off prices will apply here.

This looks like shit! The original 90's arcade game looks much better. This is obviously a quick money grab by the developers. Do this great game justice! Surely the iphone can do better than this graphics wise?

This looks atrocious - as many before me have said... Ridge Racer is about a super smooth frame-rate and massive sense of speed.... Those clips contained neither... in fact the cars looked like they were crawling through mud

yep i enjoyed pole position, fair few unlockables to. not sure what there wasnt to like unless you hate the original.

RR never really appealed to me, not sure i understand the critisism for this since it will no doubt be a decent conversion. would much prefer outrunners mind you :D

Ridge racer games are boring because the AI does nothing but drive a predetermined line. It's like they're not even there. This turns Ridge Racer into a time trial-based game. But the game was devised to be arcadey, which means the tracks themselves don't stand out as technical achievements. The tracks are too boring to be time-trial based. Arcade racers should be about the competition more than the track, but since the competition in this case is "on-rails" the game becomes boring.

Its gonna be 6 buck for 1 track then you have to pay extra 3.99 to get the rest of the tracks. In other words you paying for a demo like they did with Pac-Man CE.

I was thinking the same exact thing! If Namco gave us a nice port of R4, that would have taken up way too much of my time... again!

I'm perfectly fine with this though! Looks to be more like the PSP versions, which were excellent, in my opinion.
