'Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars' - Released in Some European Countries

posted January 17th, 2010 9:08 PM EST by Eli Hodapp in $9.99, Action, Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games

We're not entirely sure if this release was intentional, or another iTunes Connect fat-finger like Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II Discovery, but Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was released this evening in several European countries. We will have more details shortly, including a gameplay video.

For the time being, here are the screenshots from iTunes:

I don't know ANYTHING about the game but looking at the comments (and considering how GREAT Rockstar is), I think I'll just buy it right away.
And considering I'm in Paris right now and flying to New York in 5 hours, I might be the 1st GTA player on American ground!

Someone is going to complain because Rockstar is selling a full retail game that costs between 30-40 on the DS/PSP for 9.99 because Gameloft sold Gangstar for 6.99 when it came out and now it sells for 4.99.

And that is the sort of mentality that consistantly sinks Apple's ship in terms of idevice becoming a dominate gaming machine.

The prospects of brand name, AAA title, IP franchise games from major developers actually succeeding on the iphone has been severely damaged by Gameloft. And I'm a fan of Gameloft. I own most of their games, and I bought many of them at full price.

But Gameloft is a mobile/handheld developer. They don't make PC or Console games (although they are partnered with Ubisoft, which does.) This is what Gameloft does. The iphone is the bread & butter of how they succeed as a company. So they make relatively high-end games and release them at ridulously low prices. They do take shortcuts in the game-making process though, which allows them to offer these sort of low-end prices.

Rockstar doesn't take those shortcuts and, furthermore, doesn't need a piece of the iphone market in order to survive. I've mentioned before about how Gameloft has set the top of the market at 6.99. That works for Gameloft. However, companies like Konami, THQ, Rockstar, Epic, Square-Enix, Activision, Namco, etc, are not going to put forth their best effort if 6.99 turns out to be the true top of the market. Even 9.99 likely isn't good enough in the long term.

EA and Gameloft are the only exceptions in terms of bigger, non-indie developers offering full retail-quality games on the iphone at these cut-rate prices, which are simply not competitive with any of the other markets that major developers publish their games for. And even EA took shortcuts with Star Trek and Mass Effect. And don't give me COD Zombies either, because COD:Z that is not a full game.

Anyone who says developers need to set prices that are consistant within the appstore market don't realize that true developers don't even need to waste their time with the appstore market in the first place, not when there are bigger, more lucrative fish for them to fry.

I already have the original DS game so I doubt I'll bother with this one. I prefer my buttons. Also, the screenshots make it look worse than the DS game despite the higher resolution (or maybe because of it).

Yet there are still plenty of great cheap games being released by both indies and the bigger shops, so I don't see how your theory holds.

Looks better on my 3GS than these screen shots. Very impressed with it actually. Well worth the $$$.

Doesn't the DS have a smaller screen anyway?

The game is okay. Good. I give it a 8/10. Has no voice acting, no alternate driving views, just top down everything. Controls could be better. Not a console like experience like some excited people want to claim. Fun to play as is though.

The size of the DS screen is approximatively the same, but the resolution is lower. BUT you have 2 screens, on the lower one you have all the informations which keep your "action"-screen unbloated.

I finally played this one. Of course you can't compare the controls with the controls of the NDS but honestly, I don't think you could make the controls better on the ipod and it's for sure good enough!
Mac you give this game a 8/10 so I suppose you played it a few hours already ?
Since the game is very deep and there is SO MUCH to do, you can't really judge after a few minutes of playing.
About the graphics; everything runs fluid and they are definitely good, I don't know what you guys are expecting but they are at least smoother than on the NDS (the usual NDS aliasing problem...).
I had from the beginning no problems to drive a car the way I wanted it to.

I got the NDS version as well (I love it) and just tried the ipod version, believe me, the gfx on the ipod are a lot better, don't rely on the screenshots, I have no clue what happened with them but it looks definitely a LOT better than that.
