Being a big fan of Nectaris on the PC-Engine I had to load this immediately. And it's a lousy port!
Leveldesign and game balance are okay, they are pretty close to the original. Everything else is done poorly and obviously lacks attention to detail. The sound is immediate at best, the graphics are plain ugly. Most terrain tiles simply don't tile and have lots of pixel errors, the battle animations are worse than the original ones and the units don't fit on the background graphics. The whole game looks sorta distorted like they ported another version for 4:3 ratio screens to the iPhone.
Worst thing are the controls. The developers made a couple of wrong decisions for the iPhone version. You have to do anoying amounts of double tapping where a single touch would do. And the area of the map that you can see on the screen is to small even in comparison to the original PC-Engine's screen resolution. On the small iPhone screen, this game is screaming for a pinch-zoom-function, but the developers obviously didn't care.
This version needs more than one significant update before I would recommend it to anyone but the most hardcore PC-E/TG16-Fans. If this was done by a one-man-company and would cost 99 cent, I would be more forgiving, but developed by Hudson and costing 5 Dollars, this is really disappointing. If you want to play an updated version of the original Nectaris, you should probably take a look at the PS3-Download.

Nectaris was always the premiere turn-based strategy game out there and I am glad to see it still has a loyal following. I wrote the original strategy guide for the TG-16 version as the cover story in VG&CE, and hosted the leading website for the game as well. Looking forward to playing through the rest of the game.

Since Hudson is bringing back these PC Engine/TG-16 games, what are the chances of them bringing out a Bonk compilation to the iPhone/touch platform? Or Neutopia? Or the Star Soldier series?

Correction, Nectaris does not predate Advance Wars!

Famicom Wars was released in 1988 by Nintendo, and uses it's platform's name as part of the title. Famicom Wars -> Super Famicom Wars -> Advance Wars.

Yes, I love Advance Wars, however Nectaris will always remain a healthy substitute.

I have played the original version on the TG16.
It was obviously the inspiration for the Advance Wars series, and is a great strategy game.
I look forward to checking MM out...
