No news on GeoDefense for the iPad. It is my favorite tower defense game and I've been waiting since I first opened the iPad box! Get on it Critical Thought Games!

A little clarity from David Whatley's chief PR dork:

- geoDefense 2 will launch on iPhone and iPad, but the level design will be unique to each platform

- In fact, David hasn't yet settled on whether these will be two distinct products with different names (geoDefense XL? geoDefense HD? geoDefense Bigger, Longer and Uncut?), or just platform-specific versions of the same app, GD 2.

- geoDefense and geoDefense Swarm are basically two separate product lines - GD is fixed path, Swarm is open-field.

- geoDefense 2 will change things up in ways you'll learn soon.

- Exact launch timing has not been announced (whether an iPad version comes first or if they launch simultaneously is TBD)

Bonus fact: We estimate that Apple makes 300% more revenue per geoDefense installation over the average iPhone game - this is accounted for by all the replacement hardware purchased by geoDefense fans who have smashed their iPhones against the wall.

Although my somewhat apathetic attitude toward the iPad is nigh legendary around these parts (and often misunderstood to be me stating that it will fail rather than what I'm clearly always stating: it will be a niche product, successful on that level, but not iPhone/touch set-the-world-afire level), I can understand the devs behind this one wanting to make it an iPad timed exclusive: they hit the ground running with an early iPad-only title, thus taking advantage of early adopters. It won't mean more sales overall, but more visibility.

That said, while I understand the strategy, I don't think it will really work for iPad. That devices market will no doubt skew older than iPhone/touch, and most likely will not be flooded with those in their teens and early twenties which make up the large bulk of those downloading games on the iPhone/touch platform (particularly the iPod touch, which skews slightly younger than iPhone and is smack dab in the wheelhouse of the "core" gamer age group).

Iphones have a larger userbase, but when the ipad launches, there won't be nearly as much competition as far are full resolution games, so who can blame them for wanting to get in on the ground floor and try to have one of the first big ipad hits?

hardly, a phone or an mp3 player is always going to outsell a tablet and it is probably more an exercise for the developers really then a new business strategy.
