'The Hero' Lands in App Store

posted March 9th, 2010 9:30 AM EST by arn in $1.99, Action, iPhone games, iPod touch games

Chillingo's The Hero launched into the App Store on Monday. We briefly previewed the game back in February.

The game is beautifully illustrated and animated super hero game. You control your hero by using a virtual joystick in the bottom right corner, and can speed up by mashing the on-screen button on the bottom right corner. The controls work well enough, although making precise movements can be challenging as you can't just stop in mid-air and turn around, your hero has to go through his whole turning around animation before you can go the other way.

Here's our hands on video:

First impressions from our forums seem positive, and we'll take a closer look in the near future.

This article has identical information to the preview....

But the important information is included: Showing a stupid animation again and again and again was more important to the dveloper than the controls.

Sadly this looks like another game I'd enjoy if the device that played it had a physical (as opposed to virtual) thumbstick. I like my iPod alright but I'm really missing the feel of physical controls.

In my experience my favorite iPod Touch games are those that use the iPod's interface to make gameplay that isn't possible on other devices. Anything with a virtual d-pad or thumbstick just feels tacky and wrong (especially if they're 3D).

    i tend to disagree,

while I agree that there are games which do suck BECAUSE of the lack of physical controls (which in my view is mostly, not always but mostly bad implementation), there are indeed games that I find do actually play better on the touchdevices than on their counterpart with phys.controls.

as an example NOVA, which had excellent controlls that worked stunningly on the touchscreen, dare I even say better than with a real thumbstick like the PSP has.

It's a question of how well the devs tweak the controls to be perfectly in sync with the gameplay

This game looks pretty cool, but I don't understand Crystal. It seems as if it tracks achievement completion percentage for each individual game. There are no points and no running total. No combined score for all the games you've played. And some games, like The Quest and Ravensword seem to have implimented it really stupidly anyway. Oh well. Open Feint is too easy/cheap. And a lot of Plus+ games don't really lend themselves well to an anchievement system, in my opinion. And has anyone noticed the Plus achievements for Eliminate. They are absurd. Virtually unattainable. Especially like 700 points for global leaderboard positioning. I know others won't agree, but it's partially because they make console quality games that actually lend themselves to an achievement system, but I still believe that Gameloft Live is the best.

    Looks kinda boring...

If it doesn't look interesting to you... Well, I'd say don't buy it. After a lackluster week of AppStore approvals, I was glad to see this released last night. I was suprised with how well it plays and how fun and challenging it is. There's also a load of content.

Btw, if you don't like TA's way of reporting gaming news why come back to the site over and over? It's not like complaining and quasi-critiquing everything actually helps others.

tbh this game would bore me after 30 mins...

with the lack of games released lately. this seems pretty good. i just hope it shows u what quests to do to be able to finish the level.

Oh I'm sorry was I supposed to cheer for every new Chillingo release that comes out like you? Thank you but no thanks I think I'm entitled to my opinion same as you bro.

All the dicks who said 'Look'...well, if you play it you'd find it is suited to the touch controls, has decent controls, is not boring and just because you can't spend $1.99 of your parent's money on a game doesn't mean you can assume things and assert them as facts.

Opinions: everyone has one, but yours is always the best

  • IntenseMX

I was more exited about the game name lol.

was bored half way through the trailer haha

  • Deewin

The theme and art style of the game looks really good but I wish it took more advantage of the superhero theme.

  • diffusion8r

My opinion is a hell of a lot more valid and correct if I have played the game that of those who haven't. Yes, it is still an opinion but anyone who has played the game or any game will be able to create a truer opinion of it.

  • diffusion8r

In this game Crystal is implemented really well, better than previous efforts...but I agree, seems separate on each game rather than a collaborative service.

  • misfitskater6

I bought it and played it, haven't gotten far at all but it's fun. The first level is very easy, but I'm sure it'll get harder. If you like MiniSquadron's style of gameplay, you'll probably like this.

Not my cup of tea. He never lands right? Just completely flies with his arms outstretched the whole time? lol Just watching him fly along the street with his arms like that then do a 180 degree turn where his hands go into the street then his legs flip around the other direction lawl

Downloading it now! Looks great and I can't wait to play it.

actually, the "important" info is, "please buy this game using our iTunes link." Nothing wrong with that, just wish they'd actually added something new rather than copy and paste what they wrote before.

My problem with the touch controls is that my fingers tend to either stick to the screen or don't move too smoothly along the glass; also, without a physical feel, by fingers move so I end up trying to hit a virtual button that isn't there anymore because I have no physical feedback or "connection" with the controls.

My sessions of Giana Sisters sometimes suffer because of this, ending up hitting the fireball button instead of the jump and falling to my death.
