EA's 'Command & Conquer: Red Alert' and 2K Games' 'Civilization Revolution' Strategy Games Coming to iPad

posted April 1st, 2010 12:36 AM EST by Eli Hodapp in iPad Games, Upcoming Games

Along with the blitz of iPad details leaking out of the App Store this evening comes EA's Command & Conquer: Red Alert for $14.99, a real time strategy game that appears to share quite a few interface elements with the iPhone version. Since the iPad was first announced, the increased screen real estate has left RTS gamers drooling at the potential of playing a full fledged strategy game without the somewhat annoying limitations of the small iPhone screen.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert is yet another game on our long list of games we're going to need to be trying out this Saturday. Hopefully there is more to Red Alert than an up-sized version of the iPhone game. I've got my fingers crossed at least.

Also coming for $12.99 is Civilization Revolution which has been "updated and optimized" for the high resolution display of the iPad... Yet another game to add to our busy Saturday morning.

Civilization should be great with more screen space. Command and Conquer will also be excellent if they provide lots more content than the iphone version.

If they make an iPad version of Rockband I'll easily pay $15 for it. Anything else? Probably not.

I guess what bothers me is that devs aren't actually making many new games, but are instead just using better textures and slapping on a $10 higher price tag. I can't think of any new games for the iPad that look great, just updated iPhone titles. Hopefully Saturday will prove me wrong though.

Is that the one where it was good except came with too little content, and you had to buy more with DLC? Or do I have it confused with some other RTS?

If the iPad version comes with a nice amount of content for $15 that could be great. I’m new to RTS but eager to see it done well.

Big question for me is if Civilization Revolution for iPad will have proper network multiplayer, sorely missed on the iPhone...

I'd much rather play Civ actually.

Yes, that's the one. It came with a couple of skirmish maps if I remember, but I managed to beat those in a few minutes. They posed no real challenge and didn't force you to use your units strategically at all, imo.
The Story mode just felt like a tutorial for Skirmish, and as Skirmish is mostly why people play RTS, it seemed pointless buying more maps when the basic game play was so weak. That said, they nailed the UI. Very well done.

I'm definitely getting Wesnoth for 59p. I would love to pay that much for a Civ game, only if it were more like Civ IV.

Now I definitely would love to see Starcraft on this device :)

    Oh, please.

Most of these games were announced just hours ago and you're calling them slapped together with slightly better textures? Based on what? One screenshot here and there and about 14 seconds of jumpy video footage?

The high quality iPhone games have already validated the talent and skill that has migrated to the platform. Why would someone imagine that when gifted with a larger screen and more robust hardware suddenly these talented devs will be struck dumb and lazy?

    I don't see it.

I will say that I won't be buying many games at launch. I'm going to buy one or two and then wait several weeks to let the cream rise to the top. I won't be gobbling up $5 shovelware just to get SOMETHING on my iPad.

But then that's why the good lord gifted us with Touch Arcade. To guide us through this dark and foreboding landscape of mediocre crap ware, to the shining treasure at the end of the rainbow.

I dunno, I think some of these prices are too steep, IMO.

Whilst some games on the iPhone are worthwhile, a lot of games leave you with too little satisfaction. So, unless the gaming is going to increase in terms of depth, gameplay, enjoyment and overall quality, I can't see myself spending too many $15+ on games.

Just wait for the inevitable sales dude. There's very few games I would pay $14.99 for. C&C might have been one of them had I not already bought it it and all of its DLC on the iPhone.

I'm guessing that $14 would be a £10 buy in the UK store, but like the iPhone they will come down in price eventually.

It will be interesting to see how this market plays out, that's for sure. The iPad audience is likely to be far different from the little guys. What that means for each app category, including games, is going to be different.

It's likely they'll come down pretty quick, but it DOES seem like it will take more time/effort/money to make a standout iPad game than it does to make a standout iPhone game. Some of these cute creative, yet amateur presentation games are going to have a hard time on the new platform, I think.

Could make for a healthier market -- whatever that means to you. :)

I guess the new apps must be hiding. NGmoco, EA, Chillingo, Activision and countless others just put hi-res versions of iPhone games and not anything new. Pop Cap did a little better with PvZ by adding the PC/Mac minigames (and a new one). Most developers aren't even taking advantage of the iPhone/iPad bundling system, making users pay a second time for the same game.
