New Content Comes to 'We Rule,' ngmoco CEO Says Server Tweaks On the Way

posted May 3rd, 2010 1:00 PM EST by Brad Nicholson in Free, iPad Games, iPhone games, iPod touch games, News, Simulation

Now seems like as good a time as ever to wipe those rotted plants and put your dimwitted builders back to work. The folks behind ngmoco's We Rule have updated the title with several new crops and buildings -- and even more is on the way.

In a recent post on the ngmoco official blog, studio CEO Neil Young outlined the new content that came in an update last week: The Barn & Ox pairing and a range of fresh crops.

The Barn is a simple red building that comes with one four-legged bovine that grazes among the builders. The crops are different breeds of beasts than the casual addition of a building. The magic Asparagus, Eggplant, Artichoke, Pineapples, and similarly titled Cauliflower are high yield, high-cost crops designed for what Young calls "power users."

"We're going to be rolling out new content on a fairly regular cadence over the course of the game's life and we have enhancements lined up for many, many months to come," Young wrote.

"We'll be introducing new businesses, buildings, harvestable decorations and upgrades for your kingdom as well as new features. We're committed to keeping your experience fresh and are excited to share our upcoming content with you."

Some of that content is for the over level 25 crowd who have, more than likely, built everything that can be built in the game. In the "coming weeks," Young promised that a push update would dish out more decorations and buildings in addition to a much-needed land space upgrade.

Of course the manic servers have burned many users in the last few weeks. Young sympathized with the lost crops and troubles people have been experiencing as a result of the servers -- a problem Young attributed to the game being overloaded with people.

"I want to assure you that we want you to be able to play the game whenever and wherever you want without interruption, without loss of connection and without concern that your crops or jobs may spoil because there are more people trying to connect than the infrastructure can handle."

"To address these issues we're working around the clock to scale our physical infrastructure and we're also in the process of finishing a new round of changes to both the We Rule and Plus+ servers, as well as an update to the We Rule App to help address any continuing connection issues."

    Officially done with this game.
Worst servers EVER. I connect maybe once every 10 tries. I don't want to have to spend 30 min trying to do something that should take 3 max. On top of that, EVERY time I try to visit more than 3 kingdoms, it crashes. Not every now and then... EVERY time. Sometimes it does it when visiting only 1 kingdom... and i restart my phone daily.

Yep, I'm done with this game until everyone else is too, so then the servers won't be packed lol.

As if it would've been THAT much of a problem to restrict servers to a certain capacity. These are errors Blizzard made 5 years ago with WoW, EA made 13 years ago with UO. It happens again and again. How HARD can this be? Reams. Userlimit. Done. But no.

Done with this game. Just like with Minigore.

agreed. Although it's not as bad trying to play this on my 3gs or ipad, but I tried it on the 3g and the experience was absolutely horrendous. I came back into the game because I had a few nongamer friends in it but they stopped playing after a while.

I stopped playing this game the moment I realized the buildings did nothing except look different. The peasants being totally useless was also a big factor. I want to install buildings that generate special peasants, like some that harvest crops before they go bad or others that visit other kingdoms to trade items your different shops produce.

But no, they oversimplified the game to the point where it gets pointless after a week or two. There's so much they could have done with this game that it get depressing when you look at what they left out.

Too little, too late. I already deleted the game off all my devices and have absolutely zero plans to ever re-install it again. Sorry guys, you blew it!

I'm only level 15 but Im enjoying the game fine, tis a little something to do for like 5 mins a day when Im bored, check my crosp, harvet, plant, maybe bang down a new building.

My iggest beef with the game is that selecting some stuff and re-positioning it can sometimes be a huge hassle. But other than that, hey, its a free fun little game to build your little town. Adn yeah, connecting to servers takes ages soemtimes, but its nothing I cant really deal with.

I am happy about the new updates and I enjoy the game very much. I do wish it wasn't so hard to stay connected though. The games still crashes a lot and sometimes I can't get on at all! I am at level 21! Add me giddykitty37

The servers are inaccessible every second day or so. The game became boring by the time I reached level 15. The new crops are a nice addition but I would expect more.

The game is so simplistic that it seems like electronic finger-twiddling. I don't know anything about Farmville, but I do know that the Facebook game "Mousehunt" got the interactive gaming thing down better. If you give us a feature like "More houses attract more inhabitants", then there should be something that more inhabitants is good for.

    Meh.

To be honest, I as well have to agree with the "to little to late" statement. I just hit level 21 today and this entire time of playing; I tried my hardest to like it...I really did. You have very little room to work with and yes nothing is interactive. You can only decorate for so long right?

If there were at least some mini-games or something to add life other than crops and mindless people that walk on water amongst dragons and griffins maybe I'd be a bit more pleased. It's a great idea of a game but since the day it was released, it has been plagued with bugs and crashes till this very moment. To all my "We Rule" friends, I will be taking an extended leave of absence until there is more content as stated and especially once the crashing/bugs are fixed. Thank you for what it has been worth though ngmoco.

Despite all the issues, I still enjoy playing this game. At least they're addressing the issues and working to improve them. When the game becomes unplayable for a whole week is when I give up.

I downloaded We Rule Red. Though it has solved the friends problem (couldn't view everyone before, now they all show up), the connectivity issues are all still there. I have had MANY issues with connection since the beginning, and that has not changed, especially during peak use times (like weekends). When will this be fixed????

I also posted this elsewhere: WE RULE CRASH PROBLEM IDENTIFIED!
We need to make this known. I am not a programmer but I have some basic knowledge of what is causing We Rule for iPhone to crash when launched on iPad:

My observation was that the iPad Mail program was using 27% of my free memory. After turning off Mail in Preferences and REBOOTING (mandatory), I freed up 27% of free memory and was able to play MUCH longer. Also make sure no sites are open in Safari on your iPhone/iPad/iTouch before or after reboot. Safari on our mobile devices is also known to use memory. Further observation showed that after We Rule was launched, Springboard also used on avg about 15-16MB, causing wired (system) memory to exceed 50% when the game crashed.

Thus, We Rule ultimately caused Springboard to choke when We Rule accumulated 27-28MB of resident private (RPRVT) memory and not releasing/freeing it as the game progressed. As it turns out, it is not a memory leak and the game was well-coded. The game is merely not freeing up unused memory during play which would render any game unplayable. If everything is saved at the server side, then moving around town or going around for hire/buying items shouldn't cause We Rule to eat all of my RAM (memory)! Clearly, for a game this advanced, NGMOCO needs to implement a "Garbage Collector", as used much in Java, to free ram when not in use. Now we just need to wait for a fix...

Apparently, Apple has also deemed my post inappropriate for the sole purpose of wowing people of it's app store with some really crappy apps. I think only Apple can turn NGMOCO's head to fix the problem. Which is the reason why I try before I buy apps off iTunes.

Love the game...I thought. Great concept, but it needs work on the execution. Not TOO glitchy now, just enough to make you want to THROW your phone, not KILL it.
One issue is that all the shoppes coming out are for long-time players. Not that I'm complaining. I'm level 25. But the people who're at Level 13 and need some XP points? They can just order something at their friend's Kingdom. They need something new, too.
And finally, I found the Magic Asparagus and Cauliflower much better when they grew for 24 hours, not 12. Because, as most 14 year-olds are, I'm sleepy. If I'm not rushing off in the morning for vacation, I'm sleeping. Till noon. So I don't have the time to plant at 7 pm and harvest 7am. Or 10pm and 10 am. (Because I have to share this dang thing with my mom...I know, I'm hoping I get my own this Christmas...)So I don't know, maybe give a choice for 12 hours or 24? Whatever.
And now, my ideas for shoppes. Maybe a Mojo factory that gives you a Mojo every day. Except that it can't cost mojo. Oxy-moron much? Maybe a DEQ(air cleaner station) to clean the air from the bad breath of that Serpent's Lair? And then maybe an electronics factory? Buy some laptops?

    Thanks for reading,
