I'm not sure at 100% but when i choose harder as a dificulty it give me less stars then when i choose insane..i can give you screenshots if you want.
Just go to search a level,then click on a dificulty, click search and at this time you will get free stars.
Yeah, it's a bad glitch.. I tried it thinking that it wouldn't work but it did and it work even on featured levels you have just to scroll to see...
