Hi, One thing that bothers me about most of the map apps out there is that they are online only as far as usability. That's great if your an iPhone user with a media plan but as an iPod Touch users it's pratically useless for driving. I've tried one of the offline ...um, jailbroken...apps and had trouble getting it to work or even figuring out how to get it to work. It would be nice to download a map for a given area (a city and surrounding areas, for instance) for offiline use. Yes, it'll take up space on your iPod Touch, but you could at least you could use it. With the ability of getting dirving directions from inside that city, it would be even better. Google Maps should really be able to do something like this, but I guess the focus is on iPhone users. Any apps out there like this? Any planned apps like this? Surely, even Google must realize that this would be useful.
There is one app like this I know of but will not share it's name because it does not deliver what it's description says. Maps are 10 years old and search doesn't work even when you follow their directions. Sorry I'm no help, but maybe just a warning to all if you happen to find the app. It's under $5. I'm sure we would all have heard of such an app if it actually worked as described.
I was looking for a similar app a while back. Didn't end up getting one though, since I couldn't find one with decent reviews...
OffMaps is pretty good. You can't search in offline mode (obviously) so bookmark some locations you plan to visit before you are out of your service area. Also, it uses openstreetmap.org so the more rural areas may not be completely charted. I only wish it offered a minimum view level slider when saving maps: I only ever need the street level for all practical purposes. If you want a really nice app, however, go with Navigon.
