Are Australians thought of as being racist?

I think the real question is, if Australians are racist am I as an American supposed to care?

I think that we are more tolerant than most! Whoever thinks that all Australians are generally racist is rasist him/her self. You can't paint the whole nation as rasist because of one or two nut jobs!
Are you talking about that "Hey Hey, Its Saturday" incident?
If you are then its a HUGE overeaction. Media loves to make sensation out of nothing.

The media here in India does potray Australians as racists after the recent attacks on the Indian students. But that's just the media's veiw.

 

I had nothing against Australians but recently there have been a lot of attacks on Indian students there making me change my perception about Australians
It was on my list of countries to go on a holiday. Not anymore. A few "not so smart" australians have put bad name to all of Australia.

 

Yes, there were attacks on Indian students, mostly by drunk idiots. There are brawls sometimes where white Australians, asians, jews and others get hurt. It happens everywhere. There is no organisation that targets particular ethnic group. The attacks are not so numerous as to make Australia a dangerous country. Most attacks were against taxi drivers, at night, driving drunken people home. Quite a lot of taxi drivers are Indian. Taxi drivers of all backgrounds get attacked from time to time, but these incidents are rare. Media has a nasty habit of blowing things out of proportions. You should do yourself a favour and talk to people who have actually been to Australia. That way you'll get a better picture of what Australia is like.

I looked at the article. While some details were correct, others were omitted.

Why not give dates? I can also say that untill recent years American Blacks didn't have the right to vote. Does it mean US is rasist? Australia today is different than it was in the 40s and 50s, or even 70s and 80s.

Examples? The article was written by a person who wanted to relay an image of Australia by making suggestive and vague comments that don't give facts but push the reader unfamiliar with our culture to form a particular opinion.

Australia consists of people from different cultural, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Vast majority of the population are normal decent people who don't care what colour skin you have but what kind of person you are. There are idiots out there (just like everywhere else), but you can't form an opinion of the country based on the actions of a couple of people. I myself am an immigrant. I came here with my parents 17 years ago from Ukraine. I found Australians to be warm and friendly people. Europeans (west and east) can be far less tolerant, and I am speaking from experience.

Again, media often can distort the truth to gain ratings. Happens everywhere. Take everything with a grain of salt and make up your own mind.

Well, it's a bunch of races basically clomped together and Americans generally think of themselves as one whole race, but with a bunch of subcategories for all the people living there. I know because I am one XD

 

No, I don't know how a white, african, and asian person living in America could call themselves the same race. Sure we share the same nationality but we are in no way the same race.

Oddly enough, it has been claimed that ANY two humans on the face of the planet are more closely related than ANY two chimpanzees. Due to genetic bottle necking we really aren't genetically very different. Just a small part of the larger human RACE.

While Australians generally are probably not racist, the semi-recent attacks on Indians have cast them in an unfavorable light.

I agree with eugekava in how every country has its share of racists. When I visited India on vacation, the people there treated us kind of... rudely, to say the least. Although, it manifested in small ways, no attacks of any kind. But it was there. It's kinda strange because we share 99.98% of genetic code AFAIK.
