A lot of enemies from BHQ made it to BH2, Spoiler for example hungry bug. One playable legendary hero even has acces to fungal magic as well!!

That looks quite Heroes & Castles-y Are allies a regular part of all the Heroes or just specific ones? That is a feature I have not seen explained...

Short answer: no, they're not a regular part of the single player game; some heroes like the Honey Bee general though, do have ally spawning abilities (bc he's a weaker fighter). However, in base vs base mode, your food stash automatically spawns waves of creeps, similar to League of Legends, for ex. The higher level your food stash, the better creeps will spawn. There are also some turrets you can build that spawn ally units. Finally, there are "mercenary camps" around the map that you can spend your gold on to get one time reinforcements (like a small squad of fleas, etc). So again, there are plenty of options, but they're not necessarily an integral part of the game for most heroes.
Cool. I have noticed in the vids that I keep replaying that there are little creeps with flags on their backs... must be some of those "ally" units.

Do you mean first 2 heroes unlocked so you can play your first game? It's random - it's like spinning reel and you have to stop it, this happens when you have enough stars (0,0,7,30,100,250, unknown) as well
