Lord of the Flies is the second best book I have ever read.

It's under The Stand by Stephen King, and a notch above Watership Down.

if you didn't have formaldehyde, what did you put them in then...anyway to answer your original question of whether it could be harmful, I would say yes...especially if you have the jars well sealed an all the oxygen has been consumed...it could lead to an anaerobic environment and a happy place for botulinum bacteria or the bacteria causing tetanus since both like anaerobic conditions

...who knows what else could be growing in there, but I'd bet it's just nasty and best left unopened

lol, thanks for all the answers.
I opened the container today, and thankfully, the smell hadn't escaped from the jars into the container. The jars are still sealed up. As Hodapp described, the jars now consist of a dark, murky liquid with a few animal parts left in (I can see lumps of bigger bones left over).
I think I will just put them on my mantlepiece so that I can observe the beauty for a couple weeks, before feeding them to my cat.

Have you thought of doing it to the cat! Way more fun when you actually care about the animal. You get to savor the look of betrayal on it's face before being buried.. Now that's a mantle piece.

    I like that idea.
Maybe I could freeze him, just as he shows the look of betrayal on his little face. Then I could keep the head on the mantlepiece and send all the other body parts to various communist countries. I also have a grandmother who needs 'taking care of'. Standard bin, or recycling bin? I just don't want to upset the binmen.

Ok, I just jarred two new house mice.
... this is turning into a hobby

Does anyone know how to preserve them without using formaldehyde? Any home made recipes? Or I could just make them into a big multi-animal hat.
    So far I have:

    - 1 large rat
    - 1 pheasant's head
    - 2 small squirrels
    - 1 rabit torso
    - 2 house mice.
