Alright here's the deal, it's my birthday soon and strangely enough there's nothing in the entire world I want. Then I saw the deal Sony are doing in the UK, buy a PSP Go and get 10 free games including GTA, LBP and GT PSP. Since I'm not paying for it, the price isn't such a big deal, but I'm still not totally sold.

My main problem is with the PSOne Classics, for whatever reason there isn't a single high quality photo on the web which shows how well they're displayed on the PSP. All I want is a clear idea of how the text in the FFVII menus look and I'll be sold. What resolution are most PSOne games anyway? Anyone here with a PSP, FF (or hell, any PSOne Classics) and a decent camera?

Second problem is the thumbstick. The position looks awkward and I'm not sure if it's just a matter of getting used to it. Luckily it won't be too much of a problem since I mainly want the PSOne games and the majority of those use the d-pad anyway, but I'm bound to be buying a few PSP games as well as getting the 10 free ones.

...and finally, game recommendations. At the moment I'm focused mainly on Monster Hunter, Dissidia: Final Fantasy and Power Stone Collection. There's gotta be a few hidden gems out there, so if anyone knows any let me know :)

Oh, and yes, I already own a DS.

Sorry, I don't have a PSP and so I can't help - I am just wishing that I was in your position....

I have a 2000 with some classics but not FF and no even halfway decent digital camera but with the games I have the text is easily legible and not an issue, if that's what you're wondering.

I'd also recommend getting Loco Roco 2.

Or you could just get a nice pair of shoes and a 360 game.

First, knowing your tastes in games, you probably do want a PSP, particularly if you can get it for free. PSOne classics look decent and play well on the PSP, just make sure you adjust the screen correctly (it's easy to do). Besides obvious games like FFVII, there's also Grandia, Wild Arms, and several other classic RPGs. As far as current games, I would suggest you check out IGN's list of best PSP games. I would start with Daxter and GoW. As to Dissidia and FF7 Crisis Core, I hate both with a passion, but they have many fans, so you probably won't go wrong there either. I know there are many Monster Hunter fans out there; you should probanly play the demo first and see if you like the camera and controls. Forthcoming, there's MGS if you're into that series; personally I'm waiting for Persona 3.

On the controls, well, they have always been the weakpoint for the platform for me, but I don't know if the Go has improved things.

    Hope that helps.

    NOOOOOoooooooooooooo...

Get a regular PSP. The biggest issue with PSPGo (there are many) is not all publishers are signing up for PSP content to be published on the PSN store, the most notable example is Kingdom Hearts BBS. Yep, you will not be able to get it for your PSPGo.

With that out of the way, Metal Gear Solid 5 is out next week for the PSP. Amazing game (I have the import) and will last you over a hundred hours due to the post-game content in the single player mode.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite will easily last you 400 hours. Be warned though, unlike with the latest Monster Hunter on Wii it doesn't have a gentle learning curve. You're pretty much dropped into the deep end, however if you stick with it you will experience the most satisfying game out there. DO NOT bother with the demo, it is an extremely poor representation of the actual game. I've never understood why Capcom compiles the demos for Monster Hunter in such a way.

E3 is here in two weeks where a brand new Resident Evil game will be unveiled for PSP and it is promised there will be more brand new major titles, including from Square Enix (probably the unveiling of Parasite Eve 3 and Final Fantasy XIII Agito).

    Perv, why do you care?
You get all 10 games, but you needed to register before April 1st. This was set up to reward early adopters.

But then he won't get those 10 free games. Which is a huge incentive, wish they did that here in the US.

Yeah I would get a regular UMD-Playing PSP. Not the PSPgo. PS1 classics rock and you can change the screen view and everything. It's simple and looks great. But this has already been said I guess.

Yeah, I know you wouldn't get the 10 game deal, but I still think you'd be better off with a PSP 3000. It'll be cheaper, you can buy pretty cheap UMDs now (older games can only cost £5 - £10) and you won't have a cramped analogue stick. It's your choice, but I know I'd definitely go with an older PSP.

The controls feel a lot better on my Go than it doesn on my PSP1000. I don't have massive hands though, but they're not tiny either. The analog stick doesn't feel cramped at all, most of the reports I read online of people that have actual held one say the same.

    @Midian
And why until Friday? Could they not give you your bday present later? Because you might wanna wait for E3 to come to see if anything new is announced :)

As I said, the platform is extremely restricted. First off only a scratch of the full PSP catalog is available on PSN, and Sony has stated that not even most will end up on it. Then there's publishers who aren't going to publish content on it, like Square Enix with the new Kingdom Hearts game.

A PSP-3000 will allow him to purchase the full catalog, also purchase exclusive content on PSN (minis) and will probably end up just as cheap for him as those titles given free can be picked up dirt cheap at retail anyway.

Your opinion on the GO will obviously fare better if you're comparing it to a PSP-1000. The 3000 is substantially slimmer than the 1000, lighter, has a brilliant bright screen (without the ghosting problem) and a far superior D-pad (the controls of the Go are taken from the 3000, but the Go places them more awkwardly).

I was wondering the same thing. Frankly, I never liked the original PSP form factor (I have shut it down by accident during intense gameplay countless times). Also, I find UMDs to be cumbersome and kind of last century -- but that's probably just me.

I meant it was an incentive to even get a PSP. Since he clearly doesn't want one that bad, he just can't think of anything else to get.

One of the main reasons he's even considering a PSP is because of the promotion.

Indeed, but my point is if he wants to enjoy content in the long-term, he will end up restricted with a lot of content. I just thought that would be a good point to take into consideration.

Agreed. Long term, a regular PSP would probably end up costing less and you get access to everything. Of course that's if it becomes a long term handheld and not just something you get bored of quickly or replace with a newer model.

Couldn't agree more, psp 3000 is really light, downloads pretty good from the psn store, and if like me you have a PS3, you can interact between the two.

UMDs are dropping in price at game station due to competition with game, just shop around for the deals :)

If it's your first PSP, then get the Go. If you buy a 3000, you'll be happy, but you'll probably miss the 10 games offer and the easy access of the Go. But if you like owning the actual games and having a larger device perfect for long Car or Plane trips, get the 3000, and you'll be able to get cheap UMDs with the 3000 too.

You need to register after April 1st, it's not rewarding early adopters, it's trying to get more summer sales. From people like me.

Yeah it's the free games that really got me. I know I'd be missing out on a bunch of UMD-only releases, but to be honest other than Crisis Core I can't even think of any I care about... unless someone wants to enlighten me. All I really want to play at the moment are Monster Hunter, Power Stone Collection and the PSOne games.

I have hit another slightly annoying problem though. My PSP games would be downloaded from my UK PSN account, but my PSOne Classics are already on my US account, and the PSP requires you to be signed in to the correct account in order to play the games... so I'd have to keep switching back and forth to activate the one I want. Does anyone know if it's much of a hassle?
