Ok so I need some opinions of the different programs offered, since I need to buy some to install on my Mac.

    Keynote vs. Powerpoint

I like Powerpoint, but I've never had a chance to play around with Keynote, so idk how to compare the two. I've read a few reviews for Keynote, but TA has proven to be a good place for opinions ;)

    Pages vs. Word

Ok I think Pages is Apple's version of Word, correct me if I'm wrong. What do you guys think?

I've been looking at iWork, it comes with Pages, Keynote, and Numbers '09 all in one for $79, so I think thats a pretty good deal. Again, opinions people, opinions! Lol. Thanks.

This is TA- aka Apple fanboy HQ- hence the opinions tend to be more bias towards Apple and their products. I am one of those people. I have iWorks 08 and it's fantastic, I suggest you buy iWorks 09.

I thought it was Pages, not Overview, that was Apple's essential equivalent of MS Word
in fact I've never heard of anything called Overview..

Ok that helps a lot. I've found myself turning into an Apple fanboy slowly but surely, but I mean, how can you blame anyone? Personally, I find Apple's products to be revolutionary in the technology world. I mean, NO ONE has been able to rival their touch technology, its simply superb. Speaking of, have you guys seen the Magic Mouse? I fell in love right when I saw it, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy it in the near future.

You are more than correct, my stupidity never ceases to amaze me, I wasn't paying attention when I was reading the Apple site..and..yea..lol thanks for pointing that out. [/facepalm] to myself lol :)

Seriously though Derek, I advise you to get iWorks- it's a great deal and made specifically BY Apple FOR Apple. Also, the new Magic Mouse is amazing, I've tried it out and fell in love with it. :p The gestures and everything work amazing and it feels like an iDevice for a mouse..

I really enjoy Office. With my student discount, I got the full suite for $70. I've never played with the Mac programs, but the Office programs are very nice and uniform. It is a major jump over 2003. But if you feel Office is your speed, I'd wait for Office 2010, there are a few things about 2007 (while not a burden on the program) could be a just a smidge better. For example: when choosing styles, the drop down menu may cover part of your document the style is effecting. This is probably my biggest complaint.

Yea that's what has been pushing me more towards iWork, programs that are designed for a specific OS always work better. Plus, Apple owns :) I'm so jealous you've gotten to mess around with the Magic Mouse! That thing is so..epic. The design is sleek, the gestures look so easy to use..gah. I can't wait till I get one. I love my touchpad on my MB Pro, but sometimes its just nice to have an actual mouse.

Yea I've grown up with the Office programs, and they are easy to use. Hell, I just made a Powerpoint 2 nights ago for a presentation lol. But yea I have read about that theme problem somewhere. Amazing when companies somehow manage to take a step back for the worse lol :p

this is in no way a deal breaker, I don't use theme's for 95% of the thing I use the whole suite for. And 2007 is a major leap ahead of 2003, it was definatly not a step back.
Plus, if you find a student discount (valid .edu address) the whole suite for $70 is definatly a slickdeal.

Theme's own though :p what all in comes in the suite? Because iWork is Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for $79.

You don't like Macs? Dang. I never did either actually. In fact, I always made fun of my friend because he owned an iMac and knew everything about Apple, but then I got a MB Pro and fell in love..haha. Partly because I hate Vista [then again, who doesn't] They released Windows 7 I think..but I only ever really liked XP. But after having my Mac for a few months idk how I would ever go back to Windows. Its so weird how things like that are.

I personally prefer keynote over PowerPoint, it's a lot easier to use and the use of templates makes the presentations look a lot nicer. But pages, not so much. I've never really gotten used to pages, and I still use word for all of my text editing jobs. So keynote yes, pages no.

Isn't there a Mac build for OpenOffice? OpenOffice is free.

I use OpenOffice for Windows exclusively- it is compatible with just about every file that MS Office can create. I used it for my term papers and essays in school.

Yep, there is a OS X version of OpenOffice.

I grew up using MS Word but hated it since 2003, especially the watered-down Mac version. I really enjoy using Pages 09 for my papers. As long you don't need complex indexing or embedding excel data its just the cleanest and most inspiring (writing fullscreen with an beautiful typeface) text tool i know. I would prefer Keynote over Powepoint, too.

Keynote >>>>>>>>> Powerpoint. The transitions are more three-dimensional and it overall looks cleaner. Go into an Apple store and do a spotlight search for Duccati (Superbike) and just watch what that presentation looks like in Keynote. Then watch it in Powerpoint and you'll see the difference. Granted transitions won't transfer between the two, but if you're the one bringing your computer in for the presentation it will look much better.

However if you're not comfortable learning something new Office for mac is still good, I just personally know that Keynote would be the main reason iWork > Office.

Yea I thought like that at first. But then again, I do love fiddling with new programs :D

Yea I looked at some Keynote templates and they looked really slick..hopefully Pages would be something I could get used to :p

Yea someone suggested OpenOffice last night. I downloaded it, but then it said disk image could not be something. Idk I forgot. But I didn't feel like downloading it again so no OpenOffice for me lol :p

When I read that there was a fullscreen writing option I was like damn..that'd be pretty nice lol

Good to hear :) Actually, I was watching a vid in Health about Al Gore talking about global warming, and he had a lot of those animations in his presentation and I was wondering how he did that till I saw that he was using a Mac :D

Actually there are two of them - OpenOffice and NeoOffice

Not entirely sure about the differences, however I use NeoOffice.
