Guys, the matter is that slider on iphone is better than buttons. Iphone surface is smooth and glassy - so it is better to slide on it with fingers. Sense of buttons can be real only on joystick where these damned buttons push above the surface and fingers feel them. It is a real argument against button emulation! You will see soon that many developers would produce 2D platformers with exactly the same operation - as it is much more precise than arrows.
Granted sometimes people do go OTT and expect 50,000 levels, a new app icon as they dont like the one on display and a new app name, constant updates etc for their 69p. But on the other hand a lot of devs offer alternative control schemes (eg tilt/touch) as it will attract more people. A lot of times i've seen games come out with 'different' control schemes, the dev stands by it and then due to poor sales 'suddenly' they offer touch controls instead of just tilt for example. If the user base are asking for alternative controls then its worth exploring instead of 'no we are sure this is the best, we wont change our mind'. Toucharcade can be very very useful for devs as theres potentially 1000's of people happy to beta test, 1000's of people who play a lot of iOS games and have a good opinion on what can work and what cant. As for 'bitching' some of your previous posts offer suggestions for games, surely practice what you preach and let the devs create the games they want then instead of 'bitching' yourself Its a forum, what next, we cant criticise films/tv shows or anything else we watch or pay for ? The reason some of us are going on about the controls is that we really like the game, want it to do well and sell more then we might get a sequel ! Its 'constructive criticism' Again you're part of the dev team, you may say that but many others disagree. People dont seem to be huge fans of sliders, the fact is buttons do work, you only have to look at how many platformers feature buttons. If they didnt people would have switched to sliders years ago, its not a 'new found' control method. Cant believe all the previous great companies who created platformers must all be 'wrong' then. I mean dont listen to customer feedback if you dont want to, ideally there should be an alternative control scheme just like you get on many other games. As someone who bought your game the second it was out (and not someone who will wait for the 99c game to be free) and someone who has bought a fair few IAP's in this game, would like my voice to at least be heard instead of 'dismiss any criticism about the controls'. If i read these responses before buying the game i probably would purposely avoid it due to the dev and the 'no we are right, you are not ! All games with buttons dont work well, its sliders all the way' ! attitude. Its a good game but shame about the devs opinions.
Is it possible to get a "perfect" in the tutorial levels with the default character? The timing just seems impossible, even though I'm having no trouble doing so in the first world.
You can't. Tutorial levels are just too simple to be considered for "perfect time". And well, they are just tutorials, not the real levels.
Haha, can something be done about this? As a completionist, it's just so odd and jarring seeing menus that are so inconsistent. 6 mushrooms collected with 5/6 showing, 1/6 levels with a perfect time...lol, it's just confusing. Maybe it's my OCD getting the better of me...I dunno! I don't know how the whole different characters/collection of mushrooms thing can be resolved, but it wouldn't hurt being able to "perfect time" all the tutorial levels...right? Sorry for all the nitpicking...I just really love the challenge, exploration, level design...the whole game in general.
Because of that and the animation the game has, seems so livid, this has become my new SMB iOS fix, earned a high place on my iPhone
That's fine... It is your game. But there's plenty of developers who are responsive and listen to customers who'd I'd rather support. Personally, I don't mind missing out on this one until it goes free or you do finally realize that ****ing sliders aren't for everyone, and not everyone thinks or plays games exactly like you or like you want them to, and throw in touch controls out of desperation. =o)
DAMN this game is good! So much to explore and collect, secrets to find, ceiling running to get to otherwise inaccessible areas, bonus retro levels and characters to unlock, etc. This is the best buck I've spent in a while. Great job devs!
Syntheticvoid, you're being rude. You don't have to buy the game if you don't want to. Others did and it seems like they enjoy it. Plus, as I said earlier you can set sensitivity to maximum and have pretty much the same effect as with arrows.
sorry... I guess I missed the meeting where they told everyone that having preferences and opinions was anti-gamer, and that calling people out on it by saying they're whiny and bitching was a highly respectible outstanding code of conduct. Maybe you can make sure I get the next meeting thrown up on my calendar.
syntheticvoid, If you want real buttons - you can buy this: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/joystick-it-iphone-arcade-joystick-17-06-2011/
...and I forgot to mention the speedruns and ghosts and perfect times to reach. Seriously, this is climbing up my favorite platformers list pretty quickly...
Yeah same here. Adjusting the slider to maximum sensitivity and the level design/extras is giving me a great time, from time to time. Loving this more and more. My GOTW
I find it pretty interesting that this is our most pirated game so far. According to Flurry, the game was majorly picked up by Chinese pirates and we now have 15 times more players there than the rest of the world.
Hopefully it means the word is spreading about the game, at the very least. Unfortunately people are stealing it but hopefully you'll see a similar boost in verified sales as well. You guys have created an awesome platformer and deserve success from it.
Wow. Thought I was growing tired of speedrun style platformers, but absolutely love this one. And have no problems with the controls (both methods work really well IMO). As of now, this is my GoTW.
