Yup ... Considering the actual potential of the title, putting more quality into it will surely turn it into a huge success.
Two issues here that people are talking about - hype and gameplay. Hype is what it is - you can join in on it or ignore it. I'm not sure bravetarget was necessarily trying to break the hype intentionally, but given all the positive posts, seeing a negative one will certainly have that effect (or at least be a bump in the hype road anyway), intentional or not. But what he is getting at that I think many take issue with, is pre-judging a game so strongly based on a trailer (ie. a pre-edited video meant to hype up the game, as opposed to a gameplay video) and some screenshots and text. A trailer often does not provide good enough footage of gameplay to form a decent opinion (and from what I've seen in this thread, the screenshots and descriptive text don't either). Furthermore, to make such a definitive judgment about an aspect of the game that really requires first hand play to adequately form a valid opinion constitutes action that is subject to ridicule - thus the responses from everyone. I myself try not to succumb to hype and try to keep an open mind (but nobody's perfect ). And likewise, I try not to make snap negative judgments about things w/o adequate information. Point is, you're welcome to an opinion - just try to respect the feelings of the community and post your thoughts as just that - thoughts, especially when there's simply not enough information to make blanket statements about a game.
Hey! Aren't you the dev of an upcoming Fighting game? I remember you from your negative review from the Blades of Fury forum, it's soooo obvious somebody guess right that you have a hidden agenda lol! Don't bother to post back coz i ain't responding no'mo just sayin'!
...and some day, all of us will be dead! 6 posts in your brand new profile, all slamming Ravensword? Who ARE you mystery man? That guy I flipped off in traffic? The kid I gave a wedgie to in 7th grade? A shill for a would-be competitor? Lex Luthor, evil genius? Tell me! You MUST, or I shall go MAD! MAAAAAD I TELL YOU! Actually I just came here to get my last post in... Josh and I have agreed to shut up until we have more to show or an actual release. Things are getting a little too hypey for my taste around here. The suggestions and useful criticisms have been duly noted and are being worked on. Thanks to all of you (you too, mystery man) for taking time to post your thoughts. I'm trying to talk Josh into doing a video camera capture of actual gameplay... the ones I've seen from his 3GS are smoother than the youtube one... and that youtube compression did blow out the color some. An interesting factoid about that video though... it was captured from a windows exe (the video out cable on the iPod didn't work, and we wanted a cleaner capture). It also runs on Mac. When we get some breathing room for multiplayer, there's a good possibility that you'll be able to play with people on all 3 platforms. Wii is also being pondered. But I've said too much! I must go! Away on the vagrant breeze! Hi ho!
My two cents: This game is intriguing as it stands based on the video and screen shots. Hype or no hype, it looks pretty good to me. The fact it is made by indie developers makes me want it even more. Besides that, I just don't see enough in the video to criticize or champion one way or the other. I'll tell you this, the platform needs a great action adventure RPG! I hope this is it. If not, it will surely inspire others to try, so kudos! Congrats on gaining a publisher and I appreciate that you are dedicated to getting the game right, and not rushing the release. T.O.
LMAO I love this guy! This reaction is just too funny. Good, then. As you see, you've already got some negativity because you posted a version of the game that wasn't polished or finished yet. You're forgetting Russ. Gamers are stupid, for the most part. They don't know what it means to see a game currently in Development. But anyway, from what I see now, I'm very impressed. You picked up on things you didn't even have to (like the collision with main character's head and the sign moving that sign). It's just KA for a smaller company. How many of you are there, actually? Well, duh! I can't believe not many others here picked up on that. Everything looks worse on Youtube. It's a proven factoid that Youtube has ruined at least one thing that each person loves. So, iPhone players will be able to play with Mac users (and possibly Wii players) online? That rocks! Is that part of the MMO for Ravensword next year? I still haven't figured out yet. Is that going to be an expansion pack or just a whole different game? Live long and prosper! ,\\//
Thanks to the cry babies out there who whine about the graphics on a CELL PHONE game they went with the publisher which means an extended release date... Looks like the whiners got what they wanted!
Oh please. No one ever says this when the trailer is unquestionably awesome, then the footage shown is completely representative of the gameplay. I mean that's why it's shown in the first place right? But when it sucks, rather than folks reevalutate their own hyped expectations, they suddenly say that the trailer isn't representative of the final game. Why don't they say that for all the other trailers, and if it's true, why bother looking at trailers at all?
Blades of Fury critics were constructed Thou shall nevar deceive a fighting game fanboi ! yaaaaaaaaaaar (p.s : my personal opinions are my only hidden agenda) Anyway, good luck to Josh and Russ. Hope to see final release this winter.
It's on my wishlist (and I have the kind of wishlist, where every game on it gets bought ) so, im waiting patiently. Good luck with it, and keep us posted if there is more news!
arta, I don't actually disagree with what you're saying: people have a way of protecting their opinions even in the face of contrary evidence. There's no question that some people were disappointed with that trailer and would rather make excuses for it than temper their expectations. Where I think you take it too far (by a mile) is saying that the trailer sucked. (I mean, you can think whatever you want about it, obviously, but can't assume that others share that opinion.) IMHO, the video showed an ambitious game that pushes the technical boundaries of the device, with some rough spots in character animation. What we've seen so far is very much in line with the kind of game it's trying to recreate in a mobile platform (please check out that Morrowind footage a few pages back). As far as I'm concerned, Ravensword has the potential to take the RPG genre to a new level on the iPlatform; the footage I saw did nothing to contradict that perspective. The people most disappointed by that trailer had ridiculously high expectations for the platform and/or nostalgia-clouded memories of other games in the genre. Perhaps it would be a good thing if the footage took it down a notch for them. Personally, I was just glad to see the game in action.
We've set the bar so low with the gameplay portion of the trailer - that everyone is gonna absolutely love the game when they actually play it! I purposely didn't show much - and after watching it again - wow - I really didn't show much! That's a good thing. There will be alot of nice suprises when the real thing comes out.
I can understand if one doesn't like open world games and/or RPGs in general but I really don't see what the problem with the trailer was. I mean it looked good, had creatures attacking you, nice looking towns/forest/snowy regions. Also what do you expect when you get knocked back from a big hit?! No one can move or control ones-self if they get hacked at. Ah well. Keep plugging away at it devs! Looking good
i never understood the guys "knocked back" comment. I mean 1) how can you tell you lose control and 2) whens the last time (hypothetically ) when you were hit by a ogre did you control yourself and not fall backwards.
Congratz on the 15k+ views after 2 days! Oh by the way I do have a question. Have you thought about the scripts, etc. for the online multiplayer updates? I know it's hard to build a online multiplayer script from the ground up and make maps for it... Or are you just going to build a expansion?
Its in our future - but its not on our mind at the moment, because of the impending deadline here. The publisher is very excited about the possibility of using their networking tools to deliver the WoW of the App store. How long and intense that will be - we do not know. The expansion pack with DLC would be first though.
I should be getting my next Beta update soon! I will let you guys know how knocked back I get from the Orcs, Goblins and Rats! I look forward to playing the whole game and seeing the depth of the story in the proper sequences!
