The fact that you are even asking this question indicates you haven't been reading the forums for very long. 99-cent games are nice, but they don't put food on the developer's tables. If we want high-quality games, we need to show developers that we are willing to pay for them: that we are not all a bunch of 13-year-olds constantly throwing temper tantrums over games that cost more than a buck! If developers can't make a reasonable amount of money developing games for the iPhone, they'll move along to another platform. I don't see any forums for the PSP or DS filled with posters whining about prices and begging for a price drop. It's gotten totally out of hand. It's a real slap in the face to developers, but the crybabies here are apparently too self-absorbed to see that. It would be much better for the app store, and the future of this platform, to support higher-priced games and apps.
Just from looking at the app store, you can tell that developers racing to 99 cents isn't the only reason why things are in a bad spot. Games can sell at a high price point. Look at civilization. It's been at 10 bucks for a week or so now and is still at #3 in games. The problem is recognition. If you don't get recognized, you can't sell. If apple changed it to top 100 based on revenue, the entire problem would go away and we would see more quality games popping up.
This man is right. If the AppStore continues a haven for casual 99 cent games, eventually we might not see anything other than that. It's actually a good that "expensive" games do good in the AppStore, because it attracts bigger projects. There's no escaping it, if we want the iPhone to grow as a gaming platform, we'll need to suck it up and pay the odd $10 price tag here and there. It really isn't the end of the world. God knows I'd drop $10 (and even more) for some games I'm a big fan of, like Command and Conquer, Settlers 2, Magic the Gathering, etc. The only reason I didn't buy Real Racing is because I'm not really a fan of racing games.
I'm not a fan of racing games either. This one transcends racing. It is the most impressive title in the app store period. The BEST is Doom Ressurection IMO, but the most all around impressive is Real Racing. Even if you're not a big racing fan, if you want to see what your device is capable of, you need this. They poured their hearts into it, and it shows.
So true. And that article posted here was quite revealing about this: I hope more and more people will get the right perspective so we can push this platform into a higher level, not stunt it.

A lot of console games dont even get 11-20hrs of campaign/story. Real Racing was only a couple hours yet it was definitely worth $10, there is no doubt about that. For a $6 to have 11-20hrs gameplay or a $2 game to have 2-10hrs is just insane to ask for. It shouldnt be defined by only how long it is, but the quality of the game itself. Imagine a 20 hour game where all you do is jump over stuff (but there is also online mode!)... This is why I paid for Real Racing, Triv Persuit, NFSU and a few others at £5.99 and have just paid for Tom Tom at £60. If it's good I have no objection to paying for it. Real Racing is worth every single penny/cent 3 or 7 times over, look out for the dev interview they gave and you'll realise how much work went into this game, so 6 quid (or whatever it is in your money) is well worth it! Coral Well-Known Member Sep 29, 2008 537 0 0 #38 Coral, Aug 19, 2009 Apple is better off letting devs choose their prices like the current system. If Apple dictated what games and apps had to cost people would go crazy. Maybe some sort of guidelines but it would be viewed the same way. I think once the ranking system is more robust and devs start to feel a pinch on their wallets they will raise their prices. I have all three of the main remaining $10 games, though I did get Civ. on sale. I think they are all worth their sale prices. arnoldc Well-Known Member Aug 14, 2009 275 0 0 #39 arnoldc, Aug 19, 2009 Don't worry, we still have some apps to cover the high end of the spectrum like Tom Tom GPS, $99.99, although it is not a game.
