Shadow Era will definitely have a lot of strategy, on par with games like MTG. Plus our game engine uses scripts for each card, so cards can have unique abilities that interact with the game in complicated ways, such as your example. I love to hear suggestions like that, keep em coming
Yeah, combos Are pretty cool There is one MTG combo I like a lot, I hope you can add something like it in the future: Lets say one card is called "Skeleton Warlord", It have amazing strength, but ridiculous high cost to play it. However, it have a special effect that can make you sacrifice it from your hand and to the graveyard (or whatever) and draw a card. Then, another card, lets say its called "Necromancer". It can have low attack power and hp, but with the effect "Sacrifice Necromancer to bring a dead ally back to play". Then you can play the Skeleton Warlord.
I've been playing trading card games since I was ten and discovered Pokemon tcg and currently play MTG and yugioh on a competitive level. Needless to say I am SUPER excited for this game and am even looking forward to beta testing it! One thing worries me, though and that is this games extreme similarity to WoW TCG. While this isn't bad from a game play stand point (WoW is a very fun, well balanced game) I'm wondering I if you have considered the possibility of legal ramifications from cryptozoic (the company that now makes WoW) for copyright infringement. You seem to have used a lot of the same terminology along with a VERY similar game system. This has hysterically been something That TCG makers are touchy about (wizards of the coast attacked upper deck for one of their card types in yugioh being 'magic cards') and I wonder if you have considered avoiding terms ilk "ally" "equipment" and "hero" for cards that fill the same roll as their WoW counterparts? Or am I completely off base and you know that they would have no legal recourse? I'm far from an authority on copyright law, I'm just curious about the game I plan on sinking a hundred or more dollars into!
Hi ChiaLike, that is a good point. While Shadow Era obviously draws inspiration from existing TCGs like MTG, WoW, and Legends of Norrath, it is a unique blend of them all. The system in Shadow Era is still being refined and balanced, and obviously the terminology is not finalized. However there is no problem with calling a main card "Hero" or having similar rules or even similar cards (key word: similar, eg "inspired by"). I can not find any references to Wizards going after Yugioh, but perhaps it was because of a trademark issue. Legally, there are three areas to watch out for: trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Trademarks deal with specific names and logos, eg "World of Warcraft". Copyright deals with specific content, eg images and text, so you wouldn't want to.... for example.... trace art from another game! Finally, patents deal with ideas and processes. The only applicable patent with TCGs is about changing orientation of a card ("tapping") to indicate its status, patented from MTG and licensed by several other TCGs like WoW.
Well you obviously (and expectedly) have a firm grasp of the situation. I'm really looking forward to this game and hope to get a chAnce at the beta!
Kyle, will there be an open beta or a closed beta where TA'ers can participate? P.S.: Please send me the phone number of that elven girl.
Awesome - I might be up for beta testing if I can squeeze in time for it Already testing another iphone TCG and haven't had tons of time for that, but this one looks even better. And wow, that new image is sexy as hell.
