Agreed. The controls are not perfect, but they work well enough. I do wish that the developers had given a slight nod to contemporary gaming and allowed for 360 aiming -- it can be frustrating to miss an enemy because they're not quite at 45 degrees. Level 3 has been kicking my butt repeatedly -- last time almost at the end of it. Still having fun trying, though. As to the IAP, it should be noted that 1) the game gives you a health pack at the end of a level if you run out; 2) you earn gems fairly regularly through gameplay; 3) you can always get gems for free by watching 10-15 second videos. Gabrien's point about IAPs taking you out of the game is well taken. Here the "offer" comes between levels, so I don't find it very distracting. And frankly, the fact that the game is not "retina" just means that the pixels are a bit soft around the edges: the game still looks vibrant and fairly sharp. The game is not perfect, but it's certainly enjoyable.
Yeah, analog controls for shooting would've been a nice addition, but I'm not really having any problems. *long cough*That was actually me and not Gabrien*cough* Yeah, the game looks great. I think people want these super sharp Chillingo graphics in every game. Personally, I don't think it would benefit this game, just like I said for Terra Noctis.
Only played two stages, but gotta say I'm enjoying it so far. The shooting controls (or lack of 360) do take getting used to. But I actually like the overall feel of the game like staying in the air while shooting down, etc. I have had crashes after each stage (on a 2G mind you), but at least it's saving my progress. Nice game!
We'll be looking into the stage clear crash right away. Wasn't a problem during all of the beta's. Sometimes the apple process can wreak a bit of havok!
Game Impressions Early impressions: Core gameplay is definitely enjoyable. Controls work well, though I don't know why I am not able to slide thumb from "jump" to "shoot" and vice versa. The slider works too, but I would still prefer a d-pad, particularly as the movement does not appear to be analog. I don't believe in "harmless" IAP outside of paying for more content. That said, the IAP in this game (so far) is some way from the worst offenders. Watching ads for in-game coin though, is the devil's work. No immediate regrets about picking this up. Would much prefer it without IAP shenanigans but can see the developers' side too. Mixed emotions since I would like to see the game succeed but the IAP system miserably fail. Support releases with zero IAP, people!
Pretty much this. I like the controls/physics. There's definitely a good amount of content for just $1.99: 11 levels, boss rush mode, 4 survival maps. The upgrade system is pretty cool. Including the iAPs is normal and fine. Allowing players to watch/view ads to earn additional gems (premium currency) in a paid game is just plain silly though.
Could you change the aiming to a full 360, sometimes I'll die because I'm trying to hit an enemy that's on a wall or one of the dragons.
IAP purchases and watching commercials to receive premium currency? Glad I read this, I was just excited about this game but now I will definately skip this one!
good game for the price. One of the better-feeling action platformers I've seen on the store, and definitely a good effort from a small developer. This game looks packed to the gills with content. Surprised to see the amount of people coming in here to talk trash on the IAP though. The developer has clearly not gimped the game in anyway, it feels like they did a good job of balancing it so you can get a solid value for your $2. People who argue otherwise and want to "teach devs a lesson by not buying" are really missing the point :/ Mobile gamers made this market what it is (race to the bottom pricing) and if they are really sincere about preferring premium-priced apps to IAP supported (or enhanced) games, then they need to start a much stronger show of support to make such a thing happen. As it is right now, pricing premium (over a couple of bucks) is suicide for nearly any developer
Little dissapointed to see no HD version or universal app. Any plans to optimize this one for the iPad?
Only negative point is i wish like Contra there were a few flying 'ships' (were they ?) where you then hit them to get a new weapon. I know theyve done it differently as you collect crystals to buy items in the shop but it would have been great if you could get a new weapon during the game. Still cant believe people dont like the 8 way shooting, come on guys, this is how it was in the 80's/90's ! Works well Actually one more point ! Agree with Gabrien, the slider does work quite well but an option for a traditional dpad would be brilliant. But enjoying this so far, some tricky levels i'm getting to but again i love the old skool look and feel.
Will buy when.. I'll pick this game up if it goes universal. IPhone=browsing/texting/emailing iPad=gaming/word processing/photo showing/and other stuff. For me at least. So, I'll buy this when it goes universal. Looking forward to it.
Good game so far but I also wish it was universal. It drives me mad that Devs don't do this with their games in this day and age. Otherwise cool game but I wish it played a little faster. It feels like game is moving slow. It's not my device as I have both iPod 4g and iPad 2 and plays exactly the same no matter which I use.
I'm not sure if I should buy this... Is it close to Metal Slug(I don't know much of retro games, but I just love that game!!) And another turnoff for me is the controls... I would gladly want to use that aim for left side...
Dunno if anyone has noticed but Slide2Play gave it a 4/4(Must Have) This is a bad time for me to have lent my iPod to my gf =( Bought 3 games (and this one) and i still can't play any D: looking forward to being able to play this... probably tomorrow
It is close to Metal Slug, but its more close to the arcade classic Contra (Or a bit like Midnight Resistance). The controls are fine, sorry but most games are developed it seems for right handed people, controls are on the left and shooting on the right, a lot of games you cant reverse this. I'm not normally keen on sliders but i'm playing it fine, really enjoying it. Plus i'm happy as i'm helping an indie developer and not a huge great corporate. Well worth the money
