I admire that in a dev. I feel the same about the Demons Souls and Ninja Gaiden teams, anyone who can stand up and say something along the lines of "our game is going to kill you, and you're gonna get angry... so we'll kill you again... but this time we'll laugh" has got my attention.
I just found a macabre shield on Level 11. Aside from the ability to scare potential enemies, how does the macabre shield match up against other shields, like the metal shield? It's hard for me to tell how effective the macabre shield is at blocking attacks.
They are all equally effective at blocking... it's just a matter of durability (wood < leather < metal etc.) and special effects that the shields may have.
Thanks, Madgarden. And thanks again for creating such a great game and being such an active participant in the TA forums. I just died on Level 12 after being weakened in two battles with warlords and before I had time to find a temple or use a couple of healing potions, a dragon breathed fire on me from outside my viewing range and I was toast. Time to start again.
You cut me to the quick, sir. I can assure you that this is indeed a scroll, and what's more, I would invite you to grab it and see for yourself. Just don't ask what's holding it up. Et tu? My potions are made from only the finest organic ingredients. Montsano is not welcome in my shoppe! *snerk* organic.
Price is going back to normal very soon (if not already in some countries)... better grab it now if you haven't already.
i'm having a lot of fun with this game madgarden, thanks again for making it free. a question..i'm just on he 7th floor and i'm playing on easy, but i'm died 14 times! it's a lot i think, correct?maybe i don't get the way to play the game rightly...i'm at level 5,when i fight against a strong warrior if i can i excape..are there any other tips?maybe it's just...me
yeah that's quite a lot since on hero mode (which per every other Roguelike is normal mode) you cant ever die through getting the sword on the 20th floor and then make the ascent. there are a ton of tips in this thread if you take the time to read back. unlike, say the minigore or eliminate threads, there's actually useful info in here. basic suggestions: keep your health up by resting or potions (resting on temples is good). don't fight if you're dying - just run away if the floor you're on is greater than your level you're in for a beatdown biggest help: KEEP TRYING! The more you play the more you learn.
Good tips above. Also, don't horde your potions and magic. I was doing this a lot thinking I would need them later and well, I'd die before I ever got to use them. Now I use them when I need them and wouldn't ya know it, there are more as you go!
This happened to me last night. I had nearly thirty potions, and who knows how many teleport scrolls and whatnot, opened a chest when at lowish health, and bam, all that's left were my boots. This time at level sixteen. Time to go again! Back to legendary!
As a total newby in the roguelike world, I noticed that staying on a level exploring most of it leads you to be almost always 1 level more than the floor you're actually on, which tends to make things a bit easier (just a bit). Thank you Mrs.Madgarden, I just checked and I have TONS, I mean TONS of potions and scrolls that I thought could come handy LATER, even if LATER never comes because I died before. BTW...are there any 'passive' objects? IE...I found a Dragon Eye...do I have to USE it, or is it automatic? Same with the magic bags...I tap but nothing happens (I do not want to tap the Dragon Eye because I feel is something special I do not want to waste). Is there any actual use of the glowing crystals? Braziers? Or they're there just for style pourpose? As I descend deeper in the dungeon, the game is more and more amazing...I keep finding things that make it fresh everytime, and not only new way of dying. Yesterday I found a strange glowing symbol on a wall, like a rune...I didn't understood what to do with it, but was cool nonetheless.
Yes, in the update that's coming this week, you won't be able to take your items for granted so easily anymore. There's no reward for most scrolls collected. Pitta, Dragon's Eye etc. just works by having it, you don't have to do anything. All of the orbs are that way. You can't waste any artifacts like orbs, amulets. Braziers etc. don't do anything *yet,* but in the next major update, then will be more important. And for the rune on the wall, well you should have pushed against that wall perhaps.
Hmmm...interesting....I'll see if I manage to find again that spot, I was actually running away from a nasty Wyvern then I was lost. Cool about the next update, looking forward to it What do you mean exactely with 'you won't be able to take your items for granted so easily anymore'. I do not like the sound of it BTW I noticed that enemies wanders and triggers traps...sometimes I think I saw enemies looting chests (but could be my own imagination), they surely drink potions and use spells sometimes...so I take there is some AI going on in the background, right? Do the AI combine attacks? Do enemies fight each others? I'm asking because I learnt (the hard way) that there is MUCH more than meets the eye in this game, which I find very cool, and I'm under the impression there are two different class of enemies: 1) Defenders of the swords, inhabitants of the caverns, evil minions... 2) Other adventurers in search of loot and glory. Do they ever battle against each others? Are there more 'human AI' pcs in the game...I mean...like groups of clerics doing their evil stuffs which I can surprise...something like that....
-Every map has a temple so make finding it your top priority whenever you hit a new area. This one stop shop can do all of the following: 1) Convert your gold to experience. 2) Heal you quickly. 3) Act as a safety zone (MOST monsters will ignore you while you're sitting on a temple, like you're invisible unless you attack them. 4) Once in a while it will even heal you instantly and restore your currently equipped shield to full power via a blessing. -Everytime you enter a map a random array of monsters are spawned even though the level layout (including stuff like traps and treasure placement) are only generated once. You can use this knowledge to your advantage in a number of ways. 1) When being pursued by a particularly nasty beast, if you can quickly get off this map (via stairs or a crack in the wall), even if you step right back next move, it will be an all new assortment of baddies (hopefully better). 2) If looking to gain more experience but not quite feeling up to going down to a new level, find a crack in the wall and you can find a whole new map's worth of baddies to beat upon even if an area you've already explored since the beasties are respawned every time you enter a map. By the same token you could quickly climb up some stairs to an earlier level and then come right back down to have that map you initially left all restocked with evil creatures (but, again, no new treasures unless dropped by the baddies). The only downside to this easy grinding is that is you become to leveled in comparison to the beasties you're fighting you'll no longer be able to gain any experience (I mean, c'mon, when you get to the point you can take out baddies on a given level in your sleep, is there really anything more to be learned from fighting them?).
Yikes! I feel so stingy now, what with my 76 Heal potions... For what it's worth, I didn't start using Heals heavily until after floor 11. Thems deep dungeon creatures are a might ornery. After about floor 11 or 12 I noticed that the chests and rubble piles began to dole out 1 or 2 items, instead of just 1 item as on the early floors. So, yeah, might as well use those potions and scrolls while you've got them. You'll find plenty of replacements later on.
Ever notice how fire from traps and dragons burns your wooden and leather shield, but doesn't burn your scrolls? Hmm... maybe I should say "didn't..."
No, pleeeeaaaase, noooooo! Normally, I don't care about fire traps, constantly running into them. But thits would change the game completely...
