I decided to get sword of fargoal but I'm not too sure which to get but after googling a little , I found out that so far , there is 2 versions of the game .

Sword of Fargoal - iPhone version

Sword of Fargoal Legends - Universal .

I'd always prefer the universal one but then upon reading more , I realized that the update to SOF 2 will only be for the iPhone only app . Is this correct ?

Assuming I want to play all these old content again , will I be able to play it on SOF 2 ? Or must I get the universal build ?

On another note , I'm new to dungeon crawlers . What is the difference between Dungeon Crawlers and typical JRPGs / KRPGS / WRPGs ?

And I'm new to this genre . I've read that the game can get a little hardcore . But will it be too hard for a first timer ?

And one last question , what makes SOF different from other dungeon crawlers like 100 rogue ?

Thanks for answering all my questions :)

Once Sword of Fargoal 2 is released (iPhone version) it will also be universal. So you'll have the classic version (Legends) and Fargoal 2 to cover the bases.

Dungeon crawlers vs. roguelikes vs. JRPGs etc... Fargoal isn't trying to be anything in particular, so I can't really say how it fits there. Most people call it a roguelike, though it originally developed apart from Rogue's influence. As for the rest, well... you'd probably know better than me. :) There's not much dialog in Fargoal, you make the story by how you play.

If you play on Squire mode, you will resurrect when you die, so it won't be too hard for a beginner.

As for the difference between Fargoal and others, well it's a different plot, different goal, different style of gameplay. It's like the difference between Canabalt and Monster Dash. I'd say Fargoal is about the journey and the exploration, the discovery... not just combat. And Fargoal 2 takes this further.

Sounds great , you've got yourself another copy sold . If i have any questions , I'll be back here to pester you guys :)

Edit : I've decided to start on normal mode . So far it's really easy , 4 levels down already . How many levels are there ? When does it start to get really hard ?

Also , I noticed that it isn't like 100 rogue or legend of yore at all . There is very little RPG aspects other than the equipment customizability (which is great) , combats really quick paced , but is that all you do ? Explore deeper and deeper ? And if you die , you start from first floor again ?

What is it about this game that people likes ? The exploration aspect ? Exploration in this is IMO a lot different than other games like deadspce and bioshock . This is much easier (i might be wrong , only sunk in an hour ?)

It will get harder very soon! You'll likely die. Then you should see if you can get further or figure out if you can avoid a similar death. Bear in mind there are loads of secret walls and loads of interesting items to find.

Can't remember how many levels there are on normal but there are quite a few. You've still got a long way to go. In terms of 'is that all you do?', basically yes. But give it a couple of run throughs and you should begin to find a little more strategy can really pay off and, by that stage, if it turns out the game is for you, you should be hooked and bugging Madgarden with 'where is the update?!' questions.

    Speaking of which...

I know, I know. When it's ready. *sulk*

    Before the 2012 apocalypse!

STYJ, well the goal is to find the Sword of Fargoal and bring it back to the surface. How you manage that is up to you. And yes, on Normal mode it's a bit easier to start off, but you'll quickly get in over your head I'm sure. ;)

    Heya Madgarden,

I want to gift an app to my daughter, which of the two should I send her?
She has an iPod touch 4thgen currently.

So SoF or SoF Legends? Getting her both would be wasteful, as she will probably only play one of them.

Get her Sword of Fargoal. Right now they are the same game with Legends being Universal and having achievements through Crystal. However, Sword of Fargoal is the one that will be getting the 2.0 overhaul that madgarden has been slaving away at and become universal itself.

Yep, this is what I'm thinking as well. And then, if after the upgrade she loves the heck out of the new one but loved the heck out of the old one, you could get the Legends version so she can have both. She'll have been able to play both at least this way, anyway.

Thanks ! (; I'll continue my current run until I die . Is there like a lowest floor where you find that sword ?

Honestly , I'd have prefer to have non auto health regeneration or at least a very long time . It makes it more realistic . But yeah , this works fine too .

There is a strategy ? I didn't know exploring had a strategy . Don't you just wander around and basically explore ? I guess in terms of reality , you'd need some preparation like compass an I guess you could consider that as strategy but in game ?

Could you give me an example of this strategy ?

Edit : on another note , I'd have died on the 4th floor 2 times without 2 restoration potions . I really don't get how the combat works . How is it that an enemy can hit 1 1 1 2 3 and then 18 ? Am I supposed to be constant on alert to prevent a monster's spike damage ? Then would I need to remember the spike damage of every monster ?

And what contributes to gaining more successful hits ? There isn't such thing as dex / accuracy so ... Similarly for misses . Or is it random ? Like rolling a dice / by luck ?

Plus I had to figure this out (through a death) that if the enemy attacks you , you cannot run (though I'm not sure about using teleport at the top right corner of the screen)

Also , I was level 4 when I'm at the 4th floor . How would I know if I'm ready to go down without dying i.e. My level is high enough to not die .

And , can multiple monsters attack you ?

Your combat ability is based on a combination of things, including your Battle Skill stat and your XP level. There is also a chance for critical hits, both by you and your opponent.

You can run from an enemy... yes, you use the teleport spell to get away, or there will be a "Flee" action if you don't have one.

Most people seem to like being 1 or 2 levels above the current floor to feel safe. And no, multiple monsters can't attack (unless it's projectile attacks).

In the Fargoal 2.0 update, most of what I've described above has changed.
    - Flee at any time
    - Multiple monsters will attack
    - Combat and other skills based on more stats such as STR, INT, DEX, CON, as well as gained skill points.

Combat with multiple beasties at once will be such a COOL addition as it gets a lot more into the tactics of crowd control, cover, and cleverly using hallways (all key staples of Roguing usually)! Very cool! :D

What exactly is this combination of things ? Or this is something a typical player doesn't need to know ?

    What is battle skill ?

So that spike damage is actually a critical hit ?

If this is for attack , what is for defense ? Battle skill and XP level as well ?

How come when you're given the option to teleport instead of flee , you must teleport in order to run and not flee ? Or is there no flee button ?

I just deleted my old save , made a new one . I didn't know you could roll the dice xD

Sword of Fargoal 2 sounds like it's gonna be great , can't wait for it's release .

Could you roughly estimate what % is completed ?

Typical player doesn't need to know, basically just look at your level or battle skill (in the pause screen) to get an idea how strong you are. Yes, attack/defense ratio is based on skill, and it's different for different enemies as well.

There's only one action button in Fargoal 1.x, so you only get one contextual option for a situation. You can swipe away to flee though, too.

Let me attempt to roughly estimate percentage completion:
    PROCESSING...
    PROCESSING...
    ?STACK OVERFLOW ERROR

    *DOES NOT COMPUTE*

At this stage, Paul regularly experiences nightmares where he's enjoying himself under a beautiful sunny day with some fine beer and some even finer looking women, only to have a bunch of SoF fans pop up from nowhere pestering "WHEN'S IT DONE??" "YOU'RE LATE MAN!!!" "YOU SAID SUMMER, NOW WHAT???"

About then he wakes up screaming in the middle of the deep black night, sweating and breathing hard. Innocence lost.

That's what you get when you enjoy making games enough to actually talk to the fans about it :p
