Hey Greg, yeah you won't see the Sword on floor 2. :) It's on floor 20... you will know when you get there.

And yes, stairs show up on the minimap... green for down, cyan for up. Temple is white, traps are red, gold is yellow, special stuff is pink.

If you haven't already got this you would, as Steve Jobs might say, be nuts not to take advantage of today's offer!

Fargoal is a fantastic trip down memory lane for those of us who are of a certain age, and this version is, quite simply, sublime. Suddenly the old C64 classic looks modern but still retains a true-to-its-roots retro feel, the controls are spot on, gameplay is perfectly balanced… but I guess I'm preaching to the converted!

Hopefully the sale will succeed in introducing more people to my favourite of all the Rougelikes. Good luck to the devs!

Madgarden, I am disappoint. After you assured us all that Fargoal was never going to go on sale you slap us with this?
Explain? And "We wanted publicity" is nowhere near a good reason for this. Why are you punishing your fans for supporting and trusting you?

    Do you have the game?
If yes, do you enjoy it?
If yes, do you support it?
If yes, then you feel it was worth the money.

However, not everyone has the game.
Therefore, they don't know if they enjoy it.
    Therefore, they don't support it.
Therefore, they don't know if it was worth the money, and the money may have been why they didn't purchase.

You have it, so you felt it was worth it, and you've enjoyed it for the months it's been out.

Other's haven't. He wants the game to be as popular as possible. Popularity = more updates. So if making the game free gets more players, which gets more popularity, which gets more updates, then you'll be getting even MORE for the money you spent on this game.

This isn't a punishment. It's a logical, intelligent business move and supports both those new adopters and the ones who originally paid the money.

Wow, i was waiting for a 0.99 sale, but this was an even better surprise. Never played a game like this, but always wanted to try. I am really liking the game, but i would like to ask for better controls (like a virtual d-pad), since the slide mechanics isnt very conforting. Also i sometimes think the game is too punishing, like in my first floor i open 2 chests that are explosives and i die. Congratulations, i plan to support you guys giving a good review and also buying the sequel or whatever ou intend to do.

@magihiro totally agree. People should analise if it is worth or not for themselves, not because of others.

How does this reward early adopters over people who now get the game for free? They are rewarded and treated equally. I only got the game about a month ago after months off putting of buying it incase something like this happened. I read the thread back a few pages before I got it and found someone asking if it was ever going to go free/sale, and the dev said no, so I felt secure in my purchase. This is the main reason I am angry with the dev

Electric_Shaman, I said we had no plans for a sale in the forseeable future. And we didn't. Then we were contacted about the free app a day stuff, and seemed like a good way to reach more people. So, we decided to go for it and put our app on Free App Calendar. It's called business, advertising, and all that. You know, the things required to try to make a living in this industry. I feel pretty confident that the fans who enjoy the game understand my need to feed my family, and I am confident that our game is worth every penny, paid or free or whatever else we decide to do in the future. I've spent well over a year on this game, originally starting the project back in 2003 as a free PC/Mac remake. So somehow, I don't think I've turned against the fans... especially since I myself am a fan. Yet, I still am working the day job. Should I not try to transition to making games full time? Visibility is the only way to do this. So I have no personal regrets for any decisions we've made thus far with regards to Sword of Fargoal.

    So there. ;)

Regardless of what it goes for today, this game has been worth every penny (more than every penny actually) of what it cost. Games go down. That happens. There are free offers regularly on the app store. In spite of that, this game cost much less than one cheap lunch. Snack even.

    It's totally worth it.

But, man, free? You guys should be charging more for this game if anything. If you ever make a sci-fi roguelike, I'd happily pay much more.

This is a ridiculous argument. I suppose that we should be paying $600 for a single sided, single density 5 1/4 floppy disc drive... After all that is what I paid for one when they first came out...

Business always moves forward, particularly those linked to technology... DVDs have gone down in price, LCD TVs have gone down in price, PCs have gone down in price - do you really expect software to remain at the same price forever? Exposure needs to happen in this business. If you got the game and enjoy it, be happy that you supported the developer. After all, if no one bought any games, and everyone always expected them to be free, no one would make them anymore. I have literally hundreds of games, and other electronic media (DVD, Bluray, CDs) that have dropped dramatically in price - but if I waited until they dropped, I would be waiting months or years. There is always a price to be paid to get things when you want them...

@Madgarden: Any plan to ad virtual d-pad in the future?

I'd love something like Inotia 2 or Minigore control scheme.

Stop whining and go, buy a DS... Maybe you're more happy with their price policy? :p
I don't dare imaginating what would happen, when a price of a DS game goes down from 30 bucks to 15 bucks...
    would you freak out?

But o.k., if Sword of Fargoal isn't worth anything to you, just continue complaining.

There is a virtual d-pad. Invisible and anywhere on the screen accessible.
Just drop your finger anywhere on the screen - don't swipe, don't lift it - instead start moving your finger in every direction and your character will follow your commands... ;)

This has happened sometimes (not with this game exactly but others): They update it with global online scores and make it free for some hours or days to get attention. So you have the advantage to climb up fast in the rankings because you've got some weeks or months of training before the freebie hunters. :)

    Let's take things optimistic.

Enjoying SoF, thanks for freebie. Will publish five stars review in iTunes soon, spread the word in my blog.

Thanks for your support guys. Yeah, it is a business... but dang, I'm trying to make the best frickin' roguelike I can in the process. I know it's crazy BUT IT JUST MIGHT WORK!

Yea the app calendar is a good way to reach more people. It's also a really good way to piss people off. I understand the business side of the decision, but it doesn't make me feel any better about it.
That being said, I respect your decision to push to become a full time developer. But the way you're trying to do it, imo, stinks.

All it would have taken is a heads up, or a special hat or something for those who paid.

No no sir, you are the one with the ridiculous argument. Please point me in the direction of the store that gives any of your mentioned comparable items away for free for only a day, and I shall accept it as valid.

Is there ANY way to repel bats? I keep getting chased down by hundreds of them and I can't find anything that will keep them away from me. It becomes so tedious after a few minutes.
