At Simian Squared, we have a theory about that which we've discussed on and off over time and it goes like this: The higher the quality, the more critical people will be of your game. Price doesn't appear to worry people at all. It is similar to Uncanny Valley in that it provokes a profound response in people. Had we kept it simple, linear with lower res graphics and no engine features like heat distortion, shadows, vignetting, screen burn and mosiac, I wonder if people would have been half as critical? Let's not forget every level in TOB is a megatexture - no tiles, no repetitive artwork at all. If we made it to the scale of slayin' would everyone love it? Should we be making vastly simpler titles? My bank manager would tell me yes. Less work, more IAP and less complaints. Tiny way easier to make titles garner much less controversy, perhaps because player expectations are scaled down accordingly. What do you think? I'd like to hear what TA staff think on this subject too - it's an interesting one.
There will always be a market for cheap freemium crap, a market for premium (and premium priced) games, and for anything in between. Right now the freemium crap market is popular, so my theory is that those of us that hate it have higher expectations of the premium games. Also, hurry the heck up, Apple!!
I think the player expectations were ramped up considerably on this title because of the characters. Subconciously or otherwise, many peeps were expecting this to equal Mario and other classics. Not just that but because of the vibe of the game the hype was large for a game of this size. Site's were watching this for ages. I look at Heavy Sword which has a heap more Mario type elements in it but very little hype. When it drops it will be (if done well) a positive find for people. For TOB it has been shown that people's expectations are only limited by their imagination. You throw in some divisve controls and you have a recipe for disaster. Hindsight is a turd of a thing. I'm sure next time around this whole experience will be a massive asset to your success
I bought three games released this week. The Other Brothers, Slayin', and Badlands. I've enjoyed all of them differently. The Other Brothers and Badland are on a level way above most iOS titles (including slayin'). Give it a week and see how many people are still talking about the simple games.
You should do, I'm the elusive fifth Beatle of the team - the one who did the music (and sound) Someone mentioned HEAVY Sword - my music too! What the heck
I wish I would have read this forum before I bought this garbage. The controls make it unplayable. Hope I can get a refund.
Oh you. The poor dear doesn't know the secret. Or does. Whichever. As for groupies, about the same - none. Chiptune doesn't excite the ladies as much as RnB or Ska-Face or Acidhole or whatever the kids are into these days.
Well, Toucharcade Game of the Week is taking votes now for your game of the week! Make sure you vote now! http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=184369&page=7
This post is very very funny. You assume they worked for 5 minutes to create the game before releasing it ! If thats the case 'only 15k' sounds great! But i think the devs worked for quite some time on this (many games take 9-12 months or more to create) and involve a few people or using a graphics freelancer or someone else in house. So 15k overall you could say considering it might be 2 or 3 people working solidly on it for 9 months or so full time isnt very good at all. I think theyre based in London as well so the rent is far far higher, its all relative anyway, they pay more rent, probably higher wages because of where they are, travel costs are higher etc. I hope this game does do well for them but considering all the man hours they put in the return of 'just' 15k isnt the best, hopefully they will sell many more once the update hits
Tons of character in this, floating dpad and physics are a bit of of a bummer though. Looking forward to the patch.
