I don't think the game and its expansions are overwhelming at all. There's a lot of organization and there is terrific fan help in the forums.

There is a quest log. : ) There is in my opinion decent organization---in the expansions that we have made we have tried to make things a little more organized in that the npcs give you hints when you speak to them about a quest. There is so much info at my website which if you just google me you'll find it and there are so many guides written by people from playhaven and other places that you shouldn't feel lost. Plus you can always email me. I am on call 24/7. : )

Try it. We're all very responsive to feedback. : ) The we is Dr. Vlad and me of Zarista and Elendil and Sylon of Redshift. We all want you to have fun and enjoy a classic role playing game without too many tears except when they are tears of joy at having solved a quest or cracked a puzzle. I've had many good tears like that and try to give them back. : )

But of course I've encountered the thrill of near death also many times and try to offer you the same joy. : ) Save, save, save. ; )

Thanks! I might just have to take the plunge and grab the Gold edition.

I apologize if this has been done before, but does someone mind listing out all the expansions and what order you are supposed to do them? I believe 2 or 3 come with the gold edition, so that should last me a while.

Also, about how much content hours wise does each expansion contain on average?

This happened to me too a while back (everything was fine after I continued, but it really scared me for a bit also...). For me, it happened after my iPod shut itself down from low battery. I usually need to play The Quest with my iPod plugged in, because otherwise I sometimes get too involved and ignore the low battery warnings...

    Order of play:

    The Quest
    Islands of Ice and Fire
    HOL I
    HOL II
    Mithril Hordes
    HOL III
    Escape from Asteroids
    HOL IV

I haven't finished the main Quest yet, but from the description there's 50 hours of gameplay there, and at least 30 per expansion. Regardless, there's an insane amount of content.

Wow. I just read on the HOL IV thread that four more are in the pipeline? I don't think I've ever seen a game on any platform outside of MMORPG's get this much added content. Battle for Wesnoth comes a close second, but this is insane.

Looks like the Gold edition should cover me for a while as I believe it has the first three expansions you listed.

It's good to play in this order but if you can enchant your stuff and survive you can do anything you want. : )

    The Quest
The Official Expansion you should be at least level 15 for monster levels
Mithril Horde doesn't matter what order-it's all fun and games
HOLI play after Official Expansion because of level you should be to face monsters and same for other HOLs--each HOL continues the story.
    HOLII play after HOLI
    HOLIII play after HOLII
HOLIV play after HOLIII or Asteroids
Asteroids play after HOLIII (this is only because of levels--you can try it earlier if you have high enough ac)

    To come:

    HOLV after HOLIV

Asteroids II start from Matras any level
Courier of Garabeh start from Matras any level
HordeII start from Matras any level
Shadows (originally designed to be HOLVI) start from Matras any level --this is not really a continuation of the HOL series but an introduction to a new one.

HOLIV has 60 quests--you can guess the content hours--it's a lot--someone else could better answer this question cause I count programming and testing hours and it seems to be a whole lot. : )

There are often little glitchies with iphone/ipod---these happen for various reasons--some is the autosave probably--some is possibly the memory iphone/ipod has--the ipad shouldn't have these problems just as the pc doesn't but it's always good that you share them. It helps people who may have similar problems not feel alone.

Of course the little glitchies are only a small part of the Quest and its expansions and the iphone/ipod experience but they should never be ignored.

I would love to hear your experiences on ipad. : )

If you love retro RPGs you can't go wrong here.

As others have mentioned, the mini-games are really fun and addictive, and better than many full games out there in the app store. :D

I would suggest you try the lite version first though. I played the lite a long time ago, maybe a year ago and I couldn't get into it at all...but recently a friend suggested the game to me, so when I noticed it was on sale I gave the lite another try and found that some of the things that I wasn't too crazy about before (movement controls, 3D effects and graphics) had become non-issues or even strengths (retro, hand-drawn graphics :)) to me now. My tastes have matured a lot over the past year, I suppose.

Anyway, the game is really immersive and has a lot of customization and content and those are things that I really search for in RPGs, so I am definitely not disappointed with my purchase.

Sorry for all the questions. One last one, how easy/hard is this game to get into? That this game is too hard to get into is one complaint I've heard that has made me hesitate up to now.

I'd say that the game is pretty difficult for the first few levels. I am a huge fan of The Quest, and have played all of the expansions up until Escape from Asteroids. When I first started the original game, I thought it was fun, but the difficulty of the fights put me off. However, when I managed to power through the first few levels, it became a fun 3D adventure game unlike one I've ever played! So to answer your question, it really depends on how well you plan out your actions in the game :p Barreling into hordes of enemies will definitely get you killed in the beginning of the game. Basically, if you take it slow and plan things out, it is pretty easy to get into :)

It can be a little hard to get into. When I first started, I had trouble enjoying it until I completed my first quest and got a taste of combat. From then, I was hooked.

I highly advise you try the Lite version first.

Can you transfer your save to the full game?

Yep. So you can do as much as you can in the Lite version, and then if you liked it enough you can transfer the save over and keep going.

I've had this happen a few times as well, just go back one screen and press Load Game again and it should be back to normal.

When you start the game, do this first - don't leave the small town you start in until you have spoken with everybody and learned where everything is. That will start you off with a few quests (other than the main one) and will give you a better sense of what is going on. Pick flowers - if you have high intelligence/alchemy (or even if you don't ;)) scores see what you can make with them. See what spellbooks are available to you. Get fresh water daily. SAVE OFTEN!

Don't expect to finish every quest, or soon - many of them are complex, there will be choices to make - one of the reasons why I love this game - a chance to actually role play a bit...

Another question to everyone in general - is is possible to get through this game without magic? By that I mean not putting points into Intelligence and using only scrolls/wands/books as you find them. It seems that would be very difficult - I can remember undead and shamans and witches cutting through me like a hot knife through butter, I must have been stopping to pee every 5 minutes with all the Resist Magic potions I was drinking... Things got better when I learned Magic Immunity.

Wah, a little long-winded there - methinks it's time for some coffee...

It did take me a bit to really get into the game simply because it seems very open and aimless at the start. I picked mushrooms, killed some skeletons, raided barrels, and talked to all the townsfolk. Still tooling around, but I finally got into the groove with the movement, combat, and interface. I also like flirting with the streetwalkers and being insulted by children.

I appreciate how open everything seems to be and how free you are to do what you want. I think a lot of gamers are a bit coddled by the newer generation of RPG's which hold your hand and lead you by the nose.

Once it gets its hooks in you in is exciting, you just need to take some time to get over the initial learning curve.

The good news, from what I have seen, is that if you like the game there is plenty of it and more expansions released regularly!

I never used any magic and I got along fine. Just stockpile Resist Magic potions and have a decent bow for the Shamans and magic users.

If you're trying to get through the game without using magic (or even by using magic, really), the easiest thing to do is to be 100% resistant to magic by enchanting your gear. I think I was around level 15 when I did this, because up until then the shop items were unenchantable or just very weakly enchantable :p

So I went ahead and grabbed the Gold edition. I played the lite version for a while last night and really enjoyed it.

I do have a question about character classes. What is the best mage type character? I usually enjoy playing a caster in games and usually enjoy high DPS casters like mages vs. healers or summoner/warlock types.
