It's pretty much the same thing you described. Just the experiences you'll inevitably have in the game.

For instance, I'll never forget one of the worst times that the game punished me for getting too cocky:

I was doing one of those terror missions about halfway through the game and I was doing pretty well. No real problems to speak of. I noticed that a few civilians were on a roof nearby so I send up one of my snipers up a ladder to secure the civilians and to get a better vantage point. Unfortunately I triggered some Chryssalids.

"No big deal. I can handle that."

And here's where XCOM becomes a very strict teacher. It teaches you not to overplay your hand.

Okay. So I have my two Assault guys equipped with Run and Gun so I decide to dash one of them onto the roof to take out some of the Chryssalids. Problem is, there's two ladders to get up there and my Assault guy didn't take the same one my sniper did and, of course, this triggered more Chryssalids that were hiding down the street.

"Okay that isn't good. But I can manage that."

And here's where XCOM teaches you that you're rarely ever really in control of the situation:

As I said before, I have two Assault guys equipped with Run and Gun. So instead of hunkering down the rest of my squad like I normally would, I decide to put the pressure on them and dash my other Assault guy down the street. As soon as he goes one tile past the ladder that the other Assault guy went up, I triggered two more packs. 2 Mutons and 2 Berserkers.

This normally wouldn't be a problem for guys with laser weapons and Titan Armor, but I hadn't researched them yet like an idiot so I was still running all the basic gear.

I don't need to tell you that this situation quickly got out of control. As I watched 4 of my guys get killed, I decided it was best to cut my losses and abort the mission.

    That's XCOM, baby!

There comes a point in every dungeon when you feel the hurt of being outnumbered. The room is tight, and your tactics are always risky. You come to an entrance.....

Elf: "Wizard, you gotta go first this time."
Wizard: "Dude....Bro....I got the worst gear!"
Marauder: "You're the only one who isn't cut up! We are right behind you."
Dwarf: "Let's see those fireballs Wizard!"

The sense of danger behind the next door, the satisfaction of clearing out a room by the skin of your teeth, amazing! I knew I was going to love this, just didn't know how much. GOTY

The training ground is where you level up. You have to have experience points and gold to level up. So I took my characters to the training grounds and a few quests popped up. Only written quests not gameplay. So I took them and they took 90 gold from me. Now I needed 200 gold to level and had 250 but after 90 being taken from me I now had 160 and couldn't level up. That's a sneaky way of pushing iap. Who wants to wait for levelling up?

In freemium yes it's fair to charge but already having paid $5.49 I feel ripped off.

The review never hinted at the heavy handed iaps in this game at all. Actually the video said you don't really need to buy gold.

The actual game? Not worth more than $.99 in my opinion. Gameplay is boring to me. Nothing that would keep me up all night. I'll try to like it and try to be open minded but I'm regretting more and more I bought this the more I play. It's not what the video review shows but a real iap ripoff Chillingo style. Bandages, everything you need gold and you get it taken away from you at times. I'll keep playing but I suspect this will or must go freemium so those who buy it now will be sorry.

My advice - wait till this game goes Freemium because its really freemium. I paid premium for nothing. I still will have to buy lots of iap to enjoy this game naturally unhappy about this. .

I bought this game on a TA review and regret it. I nearly didn't buy Poker Night 2 but I listened to you guys and I LOVE IT. Best game released for a long time. Had a massive showdown with Ash and I laughed till I cried.

    Review says:

"Sadly, there are a few flies in this ointment" and then mentions the gold IAP but nothing else.

So what are the other flies? Or was this just a very poor choice of words? I find overly gushingly positive TA reviews extremely worrying, I've been burned soooo many times believing them.

"Mr. Citizen, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Who wants to wait to level up? Did you seriously just ask that? Betraying your age there, chap, or more specifically your youth.

Waiting to level up is more commonly known as "playing the game", and it's how it's always been done.

You're moaning that you have to pay to level up quicker than playing the game, which is exactly what this IAP exists for - impatient people, of which you are one.

The rest of us will likely earn gold the normal way, by playing the game.

Thanks for explaining more fully, now I know to take your input with a massive pinch of salt, or more accurately, to completely ignore you :)

Yeah. I did. Because I believe in and trust Rodeo along with this game.

    The Wizard shot first ;)

It's not easy, but the game isn't meant to be. The IAP is similar to WELL DONE games that allow people with loads of money to progress faster and gives a way to get some more money into Rodeo's pockets. I'm sure GW took a fair penny from the sales.

Seriously? You rock so hard these days. Really you do.

    Yes.

With more "totally awesome" and "wicked hard" with Boston accents.

Plus there are endless fart jokes. And I hear a "yo mamma is..." Joke or two as well.

That was just the first dungeon.

Apparently there are loads of fart jokes near the end.

    ;)

TA reviews generally aren't worth the paper they're written on :)p). Just make a decision based on the multiple positive reactions in this thread if you don't trust the limited viewpoint of a single reviewer.

No, but the game does have a great narrative, it really gives a Role Playing vibe, to me anyway.
I'm not very far in the game, but it doesn't take long to see that this game screams "quality experience" right from the get go, worth every penny in my book

Yes. You are awesome. And I'm proud of myself for getting the reference. I may know and watch more movies than is healthy but I never seem to "get" references.

Today that is not true. Thank you.

And to quote Maeby, "Marry me!"

It's the existence of a consumable IAP that means I will likely not be buying this. I do think the other chap who moaned has got his priorities completely wrong, but for me as someone who likes buying proper games, a consumable IAP means that somewhere, this game has been gimped to encourage people to buy the stuff.

I hate that. I want the game to be designed purely and completely for the players to enjoy, not for them to be able to (or feel they need to) buy their way through it.

I do appreciate everyone saying you just don't need it, you can play it just fine without buying gold, but the fact that you *can* buy gold tells me that somewhere some gameplay mechanics have been set up to push the notion of just buying a bit of gold into the player's head.

    Hate it. With a passion.

    Probably older than you realize.

The 'tini-ster said something awesome and I awarded it an honour I felt right to bestow, the fact that yes, there was rocking behavior.

Is there something wrong with that? Can I not address a comment I find truthful and awesome in a fun way now? Are you the fancy talk police?

You're mistaken. I was stating a fact that the game requires you to level up in training grounds at a cost of gold and experience which you earn from playing. It is part of the game not a cheat. Gold got taken away from me in training grounds.

Your loss then. Hunters 1 and 2 are considered great games, have IAP and it doesn't diminish the games.

Would I rather that it wasn't filled with consumable IAP? Sure.

    Is it needed? EVER?

    No.

You're depriving yourself of a great experience. But please don't buy it, I'm sure nothing will change you mind about the game, and you will find it unfulfilling no matter what.

I believe this is one of the best games I've had the pleasure of playing. I generally don't like TBS games. My mind doesn't work with them, but here.... Here it is wonderful and more streamlined. It's beautiful and fun.

And as I said, if I was rich and lazy I could level up my characters super early and burn through the game in 6 hours.

Trust me when I say I do detest consumable IAP. But also trust me when I say it's not a problem here. I've been a huge proponent against poorly implemented versions of this in that they ruin an otherwise beautiful thing. Here, they are there for the lazy, simple as that.
